Lucas's legs had felt like jelly, but Bella's sudden, piercing scream injected him with a jolt of adrenaline. He scrambled after her, sprinting toward her parked car.
Further down the road, the massive truck that caused the wreckage had screeched to a halt. Bella ran up and tossed a duffel bag stuffed with cash at the driver. She ordered him to run, assuring him there were no cameras on this stretch of road and that he could avoid a vehicular manslaughter charge if he left right now.
The driver was stunned, but the sight of the money and the promise of no surveillance spurred him into action. He slammed on the gas and fled the scene.
Meanwhile, Bella yanked Lucas into her car and peeled away into the night.
When Marcus Parker and his men rushed onto the scene, he immediately checked Debbie Harris's pulse. "How far away is the ambulance?" he demanded.
"They're almost here!" one of his men replied.
Hearing those words through the haze of agony, Debbie didn't know whose hands she had fallen into, but she knew she was going to live. Having held on for this long, her adrenaline finally crashed. She slipped into a deep, heavy unconsciousness.
At The Blake Medical Center.
Sebastian Blake paced the hallway outside the operating room. Lester Ross hurried over to deliver his report.
"All the admission procedures are handled, sir," Lester said. "Thankfully, we got the news immediately and transferred her to a facility owned by the Blake family. The doctors just gave an update—two broken ribs and a ruptured spleen. It's not too critical."
Sebastian felt a flicker of profound disappointment. Debbie really was a cockroach. To survive a crash like that with nothing but broken ribs and a ruptured spleen was infuriating. Anyone with worse luck would be a corpse on a gurney right now.
"What about Mr. Ashford's family?" Sebastian asked coldly.
"The old man has already gone over to soothe them and handle the fallout," Lester replied. "It's officially been ruled a tragic traffic accident, so they can't place the blame on us. It's just a shame. Elias Ashford was about to welcome his third-generation grandchild, and now he's gone."
"Send a generous floral tribute and a heavy check," Sebastian ordered.
