Less trouble was always better than more trouble.
"Beatrice, I'm actually doing quite well right now."
With those words, Lillian effectively declined the offer.
But Beatrice was still determined to do something.
After moving past the topic of the Mercer family, they had tea together after dinner. Beatrice couldn't help but ask, "Lillian, I invited you over today mainly to ask about your grandmother's condition. Is there still a chance she might wake up?"
Lillian replied, "She's been in a vegetative state for over three years. How good could her condition really be?
But thankfully, with the best medical support, she's doing relatively okay.
As for waking up, that depends on a miracle."
Beatrice nodded slowly upon hearing this. "Who could have imagined? A strong woman like her, who overcame every hardship life threw at her, ending up like this... Lillian, can I go see her?"
The older woman shifted the conversation, now solely focused on seeing her old friend again.
Lillian naturally nodded. Given her grandmother's condition, having a familiar old friend visit and talk to her might actually improve her state.
After all, Mr. Peregrine always said that as she got closer to waking up, they needed to talk to her more.
It would help stimulate her consciousness and bring her back sooner.
Once Lillian agreed, Beatrice followed her to Halfridge Villas that very afternoon to see the old lady.
Entering the room and seeing her closest friend lying motionless on the bed, her vitals sustained entirely by machines, Beatrice was struck by an indescribable shock.
Over by the bed, Beatrice wiped her tears and waved Lillian over.
"Lillian, it hasn't been easy for you these past years, taking such good care of her. Maybe a miracle will happen, and she really will wake up."
Lillian nodded. "Beatrice, thank you for coming to see my grandmother. Let's talk somewhere else."
Given her grandmother's current state, she could likely understand some words, even if she couldn't wake up yet.
Lillian was worried Beatrice might bring up the Mercer family again, and she didn't want her grandmother getting agitated before she even had the chance to wake up.
Lillian led Beatrice to the backyard garden to chat, naturally bumping into Eleanor Lancaster.
Spotting Eleanor from a distance, Beatrice's eyes lit up. "Lillian, has your mother recovered?"
