The lawyer paused, momentarily stunned, before the realization set in.
It made perfect sense. In a high-stakes game, you never threw down your winning hand on the very first turn.
You saved it for the kill.
"I understand, Mr. Blake," the lawyer nodded.
Sebastian gave a curt nod in return. "Since Bella isn't here in person, let the legal teams hash it out.
Use this opportunity to figure out exactly what kind of game they're trying to play."
The lawyer was sharp. Catching his boss's drift, he immediately hurried off to prepare.
Inside the conference room, the two legal teams sat facing each other in a tense standoff.
Bella Ward had hired some of the most high-profile divorce attorneys in the city.
On the other side of the table sat the Blake Group's in-house corporate counsel. While they were sharks in the boardroom, handling messy divorces wasn't exactly their specialty.
After all, Sebastian's first divorce with Lillian had been practically frictionless.
They had signed the papers and processed the separation without a single hurdle.
But this situation was entirely different. Lillian had wanted a clean break and walked away without demanding anything.
Bella, on the other hand, was demanding a massive settlement, opening her jaws like a starving predator. More importantly, her ultimate goal was to avoid the divorce altogether.
The opposing lead attorney laid out Bella's primary demand immediately: she refused to divorce.
Sebastian's lawyer didn't flinch. "I'm afraid Mr. Blake is absolutely resolute on this matter. The divorce is non-negotiable.
It would be in Ms. Ward's best interest to sign the papers as soon as possible, to save everyone's time.
Speaking as a fellow professional, I highly recommend you advise your client to sign. That is the most advantageous route for her.
And, frankly, for your firm as well."
"Unfortunately," the opposing attorney replied smoothly, "our client maintains that she and Mr. Blake still share a deep emotional connection.
"Do you not find this completely absurd?" Sebastian's lawyer asked, tossing the document back. "From the day they got the marriage certificate to the day the divorce was filed, it hasn't even been half a month.
They haven't even officially lived together during that time.
And she has the audacity to demand this? Tell me, where exactly are you finding the confidence to take on a case like this?"
The opposing attorney fell silent.
It was true—this case was a massive gamble.
They were banking on a miracle. If they could somehow win this settlement, the commission would be life-changing, and their firm would become legends in the industry.
"You're getting a bit too greedy for your own good," Sebastian's lawyer warned, his tone turning sharp. "I suggest you drop this hot potato before you get burned.
That way, you won't bring the entire firm down with you.
We've done our research. Your firm has a stellar reputation. You've won several landmark cases and built a flawless track record over the years.
