Hearing this, the class president set down his glass and let out a laughing sigh. "It seems our esteemed CEO really is busy. You do not even have time to check the group chat. Everyone heard you were back in Seaview, so we moved the dinner from tomorrow to today. We were afraid you would fly straight back to the Capital after the holiday and we would miss you entirely." He pointed to the suitcase nearby. "And look at that. You almost got away today."
A wave of helplessness and guilt washed over Sylvia. She usually kept the group chat on mute and genuinely had not checked it. "I am really sorry. Things have been so hectic at the end of the year, I did not see the messages."
Just as the mood was warming up, a mocking laugh came from diagonally across the table. It was a female classmate who had always subtly been at odds with Sylvia back in school. Watching Sylvia being treated like the center of the universe, the jealousy in the woman's eyes practically spilled over.
"Sylvia, I heard you were kicked out with absolutely nothing when you divorced your ex-husband. Is that true?"
The lively room instantly went dead silent, every pair of eyes snapping straight to Sylvia's face.
Seeing the mood plummet, the woman immediately plastered on a fake smile and waved her hand dismissively. "Oh, please do not misunderstand. I did not mean anything by it. I was just asking. I am worried about you, that is all. After all, your parents moved back to Seaview from the Capital, and the Moore family's company there is gone. Word has it everything was swallowed up by your ex-husband's family?"
Sylvia raised her eyes, her gaze so calm it bordered on cold. She was just about to speak when the class president slammed his hand on the table to smooth things over.
"Hey, hey, what kind of talk is that! Ms. Moore is the CEO of a major corporation now, managing thousands of people! So what if she is divorced? Why would someone like her need to rely on a man?" He turned to Sylvia, deliberately changing the subject with a casual laugh. "By the way, Ms. Moore, are you currently single?"
Sylvia masked the coldness in her eyes and gave a brief nod. "Yes, I am single."
The moment those words left her mouth, a chorus of teasing whistles erupted around the room. The eyes of several single men instantly grew heated. The old Sylvia had been a nobody, but this Sylvia was beautiful, wealthy, and a corporate executive. Whoever managed to win her over would easily shave decades off their working life.
The class president, who had been married for years, laughed and singled out a few of the unmarried men. "Did you hear that? Ms. Moore is single! You bachelors better seize the opportunity!"
"Exactly. We rarely get together. You cannot ruin the fun for everyone, can you?"
Without giving Sylvia a chance to break free, the two women dragged her toward the door. The eager male suitors rushed ahead, eagerly grabbing her suitcase and handbag.
"Do not worry, Ms. Moore! I will guard your luggage with my life. It will not get lost!"
The large group migrated to a nearby nightclub. The moment they pushed open the doors, deafening bass slammed into Sylvia's ears, making them ache. Multicolored lights flashed frantically, and the air was thick with the smell of cheap perfume and alcohol. Sylvia despised the chaotic, smoky environment. She walked straight to the most secluded booth in the corner and sat down, refusing to get up again. Her former classmates quickly blended right in, rushing the dance floor like wild animals, twisting and jumping on the stage.
Sylvia kept her head down, staring at her phone screen, only wanting to endure this until she could politely leave.
