The virus struck with a vengeance. By the time Sylvia could no longer hold on and slumped over her desk in a deep sleep, the rest of the staff had already left for the day. She had no idea how much time had passed before she woke to the sharp, clinical sting of antiseptic. Blinking in confusion, she found herself staring at the sterile white ceiling of a hospital room. A cold sensation spread across the back of her right hand where an IV drip was firmly attached. Before she could even process her surroundings, Krystina's furious voice shattered the silence.
"You're awake? Oh, so you finally decided to wake up!" Krystina sat in a chair by the bed with her arms crossed, glaring as if she were ready to commit murder. "Sylvia, if you keep treating yourself like this, you're going to drop dead in your office and nobody will even know! If Luke hadn't gone in early this morning and found you completely unresponsive, burning up with a fever so high you could fry an egg on your forehead, you'd be a martyr to your job right now. Thank God he called an ambulance!"
Sylvia shrank back into her pillows, feeling a pang of guilt. Her throat felt like she had swallowed glass as she offered a raspy, helpless defense. "I took medicine last night. I didn't expect it to get this bad..."
Krystina looked at her pale, haggard face, torn between anger and heartbreak. Krystina was a workaholic herself, known for working day and night, but she at least had an assistant who forced her to take breaks. Even when she caught a cold or a fever, she had never ended up in such a miserable, tragic state.
Frowning sternly, Krystina did not hold back. "Those assistants of yours are completely useless! You can't keep going on like this. You need a man in your life to keep you in check! Once you're discharged, I'm having Abriella set you up with a high-quality guy, and you are going to give him a proper chance!"
This promise did nothing to ease Krystina's mind. A paid personal assistant would still just take orders from Sylvia at the end of the day. Knowing this, Krystina waited until Sylvia drifted back to sleep before stepping out into the hallway to call Abriella. The two friends put their heads together and decided to skip the blind dates entirely and take direct action.
They planned to call in a candidate they had previously scoped out. It was Quincy. They figured he could come over and take care of Sylvia. In Abriella's eyes, feelings naturally blossomed when two people spent enough time together. Quincy was a former teammate from Will's special forces days. Having transitioned away from the front lines, he was now the Captain of the city's SWAT team, known for his upright character and steady reliability.
