Steve let out an aggrieved cluck of his tongue. "Fine, fine. Just go ahead and protect your old teammate."
He sighed, wallowing in self pity. "I am just a pathetic loner. I can't catch the girl I want, and my brother is cold blooded and heartless. Ah, why is my life so miserable..."
James acted as if he had not heard a single word of that overly dramatic performance. He turned his attention back to Will, his expression instantly reverting to the cold, serious demeanor he always adopted when discussing business. "Ignore him. Keep telling me about the issues you discovered during your grassroots inspection over the last two months. I will organize it all later and submit a detailed report."
Will nodded, his killing intent vanishing in an instant. He sat up straight and resumed his briefing to James about the administrative flaws he had recently uncovered in the lower ranks. Steve, finding all this bureaucratic talk incredibly dull, simply pulled out his phone and started playing games.
It wasn't until Will finally wrapped things up. "...And those are basically the core issues exposed at the grassroots level right now."
Hearing that the report was finally over, Steve immediately pocketed his phone, his expression shifting to one of absolute seriousness. "James, you can put those minor matters on the back burner for now. They are not urgent anyway. The most pressing issue is for you to hurry up and deal with the massive mess over at Nelson Corporation!"
A trace of urgency bled into his voice. "Do you have any idea what is going on? The Nelson Corporation is completely leaderless right now. Every single day of delay is costing astronomical amounts of money!"
James's expression remained perfectly placid, not so much as a single twitch of his brow betraying any emotion. Seeing him remain as steady as a mountain facing a landslide only made Steve even more anxious.
"Brian Nelson has been completely ousted from power, but he has been throwing a fit these past few days, demanding to see you. Looking at how desperate he is, he must be backed into a corner and wants to negotiate terms for his survival face to face. Since you have already cornered him to this extent, you might as well go see him personally and find out what he wants to offer. Who knows..." Steve paused, a shrewd gleam flashing in his eyes. "Maybe that old fox is still holding onto a trump card you don't even know about?"
Hearing this, a fleeting trace of frosty coldness finally rippled through the fathomless depths of James's eyes. For the better part of a month, during Emmy's delivery and her subsequent stay at the retreat to recuperate, James had not left her side for a single moment. He certainly had not shown his face to deal with the internal chaos tearing the Nelson Corporation apart.
But all the dirty tricks Brian Nelson had pulled to scheme against Martha and seize power had already been cleanly neutralized by James's subordinates. Not only that, but James had successfully orchestrated events from the shadows to ensure Brian was permanently banished from the center of power. As a finishing touch, he had temporarily propped up the easily manipulated Martha as a puppet chairwoman.
"Are you kidding me, James?" Steve practically jumped out of his seat, staring at him in sheer disbelief. "By the time your wife finishes her confinement month, the Nelson Corporation will be bleeding out into a complete wasteland!"
He pointed toward the door, absolutely devastated. "By the time you finally decide to cast your net, all you will catch is a shattered, hollowed out shell! What is the point of that?"
James lifted his eyes, as unfathomably deep and cold as a frozen abyss, and cast a mild glance at Steve. "I am not waiting for Emmy to finish her confinement."
The man's voice was low and steady, radiating the commanding presence of a master strategist holding all the pieces. "There is someone else. Someone who hasn't made a move yet. It will only take a few more days. He definitely won't be able to sit still."
Steve froze. A figure flashed through his mind like lightning, and sudden realization dawned on him. "Are you talking about... him?"
