The doctor stepped forward to check on the babies, offering a warm smile to ease Emmy's worries.
"Don't worry, ma'am, this is a completely normal physiological response. It is simply their natural instinct reacting to the stimuli of this unfamiliar new world," the doctor explained in a soothing tone. "In fact, letting newborns cry a bit is quite beneficial. Crying loudly helps their alveoli fully expand, allowing them to establish a normal, independent respiratory system. So there is no need to fret. They will cry for a little while, and once they gradually adapt to the surrounding environment and temperature, they will naturally stop."
Emmy breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing this.
However, James's expression darkened considerably as he stood by her side. He furrowed his brows and stared at the tiny creature wailing at the top of its lungs, his face filled with undisguised distaste. "He is a bit loud."
He turned to the doctor, asking the question as if it were the most reasonable thing in the world. "This noise is going to disturb my wife's rest. Can you take him away?"
The doctor froze, completely at a loss for words. After working in the maternity ward for so many years, she had seen all sorts of reactions from new fathers. Yet, this was the very first time she had encountered a biological father requesting to have his newborn son removed simply because the crying might bother his wife.
Emmy was so amused by his absurd demand that she could not help but laugh, playfully chiding him. "How is he loud?"
She looked down at the tiny bundle in her arms, her eyes overflowing with a mother's fierce, protective love. "This is the most vibrant proof of life, showing that he has just arrived in this world. I love hearing his cry. It shows just how energetic and healthy he is."
The doctor quickly chimed in with an agreeable smile. "Yes, sir, your wife is absolutely right. Medically speaking, the louder a newborn cries, the healthier their cardiopulmonary development is."
Emmy tilted her head, her gaze fixed unwaveringly on the tiny, miraculous life beside her. A moment later, as if suddenly remembering something, she looked up at the man who had been silently guarding her bedside. A soft smile graced her eyes as she spoke in a gentle whisper. "By the way, honey, why don't you pick a name for our third child?"
James lowered his dark, deep eyes, his gaze landing on the soft, chubby little bundle. The rough pad of his thumb absentmindedly stroked the warm back of Emmy's hand as he seemed to consider the matter seriously.
After a brief silence, he spoke in a low, gravelly voice. "Our eldest is named Joey, and our second is Dolly. Bringing joy and carrying on the family's legacy... that was the expectation my father Jared placed on them when he chose their names."
James paused for a moment, his profound gaze returning to Emmy's slightly pale face. A deep, undeniable tenderness welled up in his eyes. "But I don't have such high expectations for this boy. I don't want him to shoulder the heavy burdens of the family, nor do I expect him to achieve anything earth shattering in the future. I only hope he embraces good fortune, peace, and health, growing up safely and happily for the rest of his life. So, his name will be Emanuel."
