"Honey, I think..." Before Emmy could finish her sentence, the phone on the nightstand suddenly vibrated. She stopped abruptly, instinctively glancing at the screen. The caller ID flashed with the name Keaton.
Emmy's nerves instantly tightened. She knew that recently, to keep her company while she awaited delivery, James's phone had been kept completely silent. As his top aide for many years, Keaton knew his rules better than anyone. Unless it was an absolute emergency, he would never call at a crucial time like this.
Suppressing the faint, strange sensation in her abdomen, Emmy urged, "Answer the phone first."
James merely furrowed his brow, completely ignoring the vibrating device. His jaw clenched tightly as he pressed on. "What were you going to say? You think what? Are you feeling unwell?"
Emmy's heart melted at his hyper-vigilant demeanor. She looked down and gently rubbed her heavily swollen belly. Strangely, the sudden, heavy ache and tightening had just vanished. She frowned uncertainly, wondering if she had imagined it. After all, it was easy to misinterpret physical sensations right after waking up. Perhaps the baby had just rolled over and pushed against something.
Not wanting to cause further panic in a man who was already jumping at shadows, she pressed her lips together and reassured him softly. "It's nothing. I just need to use the bathroom." She lifted her chin toward the buzzing phone. "Answer that first. Keaton must have something urgent to report."
Emmy's brow furrowed in thought. Although she had been resting and ignoring the outside world, she knew James had scheduled the final strike for the end of the year so she could deliver the baby safely. But now, he was deploying Tyler. Once Tyler stepped in, this was no longer just a corporate tug-of-war. The two factions tearing each other apart inside Nelson Corporation were bound to suffer casualties. And this moment, when both sides were battered and their defenses at their weakest, was undeniably the perfect time for James to reclaim the company.
Just as she was deep in thought, her abdomen violently contracted again without warning. "Hiss..." Emmy inhaled sharply, her hands instinctively gripping the handrails next to the toilet. This time, the pain was far more intense than when she first woke up. She was now certain it wasn't her imagination. These were real contractions. She might actually be going into labor.
