In the blink of an eye, the end of the month arrived. Emmy smoothly checked into the private hospital to await delivery. To ensure her safety this time around, James simply booked the entire highest floor of the inpatient department. Moreover, a top-tier medical team led by Dr. Hall, complete with the head of obstetrics, anesthesiologists, and neonatologists, was placed on standby twenty-four hours a day. The entire floor served only Emmy.
James also put aside all his work, staying by her side in the maternity suite every second of the day.
One afternoon, feeling suffocated in the room, Emmy supported her lower back and slowly walked out the door of the suite. The moment she stepped into the corridor, she froze. The previously spacious hallway was now heavily guarded, with two rows of bodyguards in black suits standing at strict attention every few steps. Anyone seeing this setup would think they had wandered into a high-security military compound.
Taking in the exaggerated scene, Emmy couldn't help but gasp. At the sound of her voice, James, who had just been pouring a glass of water, bolted out of the room. His normally stoic face, which wouldn't flinch even if a mountain collapsed before him, was now completely rigid, his eyes filled with sheer panic and worry. He crossed the distance in a few strides and grabbed her arm.
"What's wrong? Does your stomach hurt? Are you in labor? Dr. Hall!" he fired off the questions rapidly, turning his head to shout down the hallway.
Startled by his extreme reaction, Emmy quickly grabbed his wrist. "Honey, I'm fine." She looked at him helplessly, trying to soothe him. "I just hit my due date. It won't happen that fast. Don't be so nervous. I just felt stuffy in the room and wanted to take a walk in the hall."
Hearing this, the extreme tension in James's spine finally relaxed a fraction. But he didn't let go of her arm. Instead, he carefully pulled her closer to his chest. Seeing him act like he was facing a mortal enemy made Emmy's heart soften, though it also brought a twinge of hidden pain.
She knew exactly why he was so terrified. When she gave birth to Joey and Dolly, she had been in grave danger, and he had been absent during that chaotic, life-threatening delivery. So this time, he funneled all his fear and guilt into an almost neurotic level of caution. At the slightest movement from her, he grew a thousand times more anxious than if he were protecting an endangered species.
She woke up instantly. She was terrified of the impending, tearing agony, yet thrilled for the new little life about to arrive. Turning her head, she looked at James, who was lying beside her, maintaining his usual light sleep.
The moment she moved, the man's dark eyes snapped open, exceptionally clear and alert. "What is it? Are you uncomfortable somewhere?"
Emmy reached out and gripped his arm, her fingertips digging in slightly. "Honey, I think..."
