Dumped My Cheating Ex. Now I'm Sleeping Next to a Billionaire CEO novel Chapter 1578

James pressed his thin lips tightly together, saying nothing.

Emmy knew she had truly terrified him this time. She lifted her head slightly from his embrace, cupped his cheeks, and leaned in to initiate a kiss on his lips. She even proactively used the tip of her tongue to gently pry open his teeth. The woman's scent, mixed with a faint aroma of medicine, instantly made his breathing heavy. His large hand forcefully gripped the back of her head, just as he was about to flip the dynamic and kiss her deeply in return.

There was a sudden, urgent knocking on the door. It was followed by Brett's gruff, loud voice. "Master Sergeant! An urgent call from Major General Calony!"

The romantic atmosphere was instantly shattered. Emmy immediately pulled back from his lips. "You go take care of business first, and have the doctor properly bandage your wound again." She reached out and smoothed his messy hair. "I want to sleep a little longer anyway."

His hardened brows furrowing, James ultimately suppressed his intense lingering fear and longing. He gently helped her lie flat, pulling the blanket up and carefully tucking in the corners. "Alright, you get some good sleep. Do not worry, with me here, we will be out of this dangerous place very soon."

Seeing him turn to leave, Emmy quickly pointed to the nightstand. "Take that with you. That is the evidence Uncle Ben traded his life for. I can only truly sleep peacefully if it is in your hands."

James paused, walking over to pick up the bloodstained envelope and the USB flash drive. "Okay, I will take it to the command room to look over."

Before leaving, he leaned down once more and pressed a deeply cherished kiss to her forehead. "Sleep well."

Watching his tall, broad back disappear behind the door, Emmy's constantly tense nerves finally relaxed completely. As long as James was by her side, her heart felt incredibly at peace.

But Emmy did not sleep for too long. She was woken up by deafening artillery fire outside. When she opened her eyes, the room was pitch black, the lights turned off. Her head felt heavy and numb, her temples throbbing, and even the air she exhaled carried a burning heat. Emmy took a moment in the darkness to gather herself before barely managing to prop herself up on the edge of the bed and slowly sit up. She fumbled in the dark to put on her shoes, walked over to the table to pour herself a glass of warm water, moistened her throat, and then pushed open the door and stepped out.

Brett nodded heavily. "Yeah! He is locked up in the heavily guarded interrogation room on the bottom deck of our ship right now!"

Hearing this, Emmy let out a long sigh of relief. The biggest weight hanging over her heart had finally dropped. She asked no more about the battle. What did it matter if there was heavy artillery fire outside? As long as she knew James was on this cruise ship, she had nothing to fear. She rubbed her burning forehead and said to Brett, "Please have the doctor come check on me again, I think I have a fever."

Hearing this, Brett quickly yelled for the military doctor. The doctor rushed over with his kit, used a thermometer, and sure enough, it was a high fever. Combined with the fact that her pregnancy had just been stressed that day, her situation was delicate, and medication had to be administered with extreme caution.

"Ma'am, you absolutely cannot get out of bed and walk around anymore right now. After taking your medicine, you must strictly rest in bed!"

Emmy was very cooperative. She returned to bed, drank half a bowl of easily digestible hot soup, and swallowed the fever reducing medicine the doctor prescribed. Then, she put in her noise canceling earplugs and slipped back under the covers. The cruise ship would occasionally rock under the shockwaves of artillery fire. Even though the naval battle outside was world shattering and deafening, wrapped in the blankets that still seemed to carry James's scent, Emmy slept surprisingly soundly that night.
