Jasper Jett was one of Maeve's few genuine friends.
Hearing the words 'is dying' felt like a physical blow to her chest.
"Slade, what the hell happened?"
She had felt an uneasy sense of dread all week, and now the nightmare had arrived.
Slade's voice was ragged. "There was a massive car crash. The doctors say it doesn't look good."
Maeve simply said, "Wait for me," and ended the call. With Andres by her side, she rushed straight to the hospital.
Slade was in horrific shape. His clothes were soaked in blood, his arms and face covered in severe lacerations.
Gone was the arrogant, polished CEO; he looked like a broken, desperate man.
Andres was shocked to see Slade looking so wrecked. "What kind of mess did you get into?"
Slade didn't have time to explain. He grabbed Maeve's wrist, pointing a trembling finger toward the emergency room.
"Whether Jasper lives or dies is entirely up to you now."
Inside the ER, Jasper was entirely unresponsive, his condition critical.
A team of doctors worked frantically to stabilize him, but the monitor readings were terrifyingly bleak.
Maeve turned to Slade. "The protective talisman I gave you earlier this year—do you still have it?"
Slade reached into his torn pocket and pulled out the small charm.
He stared at it in shock. Half of the intricate design had been scorched to ash. "It burned on its own?"
Andres provided the grim answer. "It took the brunt of a fatal hit meant for you."
Maeve let out a measured breath. "If the talisman triggered, Jasper's core vitals should hold."
Without another word, she strode purposefully toward the emergency room doors.
Andres's expression darkened.
"You've been staying in Aethelburg to handle Case 921, haven't you?"
Andres was always well-informed. Thanks to Jasper's relentless legal maneuvering, Trident Group had not only cleared its name but was set to extract a colossal financial settlement from the Grover Group.
Jasper had executed a flawless, devastating legal victory.
In fact, Andres had been so impressed by Jasper's courtroom dominance that he considered hiring him as the Orca Group's chief legal counsel.
Jasper was an absolute apex predator in the courtroom.
But that level of success had painted a massive target on his back.
With Andres's prompting, the realization hit Slade like a freight train.
"That bastard... Barton Grover tried to murder Jasper with a staged car crash?"
