Maeve wanted to stay and mediate, but Titus shot her an authoritative, unyielding look. "Listen to me."
Right on cue, her phone buzzed. It was Andres. Realizing she was outranked, Maeve reluctantly backed off.
But before walking out, she leveled a fierce glare at her brother. "Naomi is my best friend. If you hurt her, I will make you pay."
Stepping swiftly into the hallway, Maeve answered the call.
"Yeah, I'm at the hospital. Something happened with Naomi, and it's turning into a massive mess. You're here? Where?"
She didn't have to walk far before spotting Andres White and Murray striding briskly down the corridor.
Andres immediately wrapped an arm around his wife, his eyes full of concern.
"I heard about Naomi. Is she alright?"
Not wanting Maeve to stand and exhaust herself, he guided her to a quiet seating area.
Once they sat down, Maeve unloaded the entire insane story.
Learning that Naomi had missed their wedding because she was brutally attacked left Andres vibrating with a quiet, lethal rage. Nancy Grover's sheer maliciousness was unforgivable.
But before he could fully process that, Maeve dropped the ultimate bombshell: Naomi was pregnant, and the father was Titus Reed.
The coincidence was so staggering it defied logic.
"Why is your brother back in Aethelburg?" Andres asked, his brow furrowing.
Maeve massaged her temples, feeling a headache coming on. "He said he was looking for someone."
"Who?"
"I didn't get the chance to ask before he kicked me out of the room. I have no idea."
Andres's gaze sharpened as he pieced it together.
"Is it possible that the person he's looking for... is Naomi?"
The realization hit Maeve like a lightning bolt.
It actually made perfect sense.
She remembered Titus leaving right after the wedding, claiming he had urgent business in Gotham. But he had mentioned he'd be back in Aethelburg soon because he needed to track someone down.
"Breathe, Maeve. Calm down," Andres murmured, wrapping his arms around her from behind.
How could she calm down?
"Did you see how unreasonable he is? He literally abducted my best friend without even giving me a heads-up!"
Andres rarely saw his cool-headed wife lose her composure like this. It seemed the only people capable of driving Maeve crazy were her own flesh and blood.
"Honestly, this might not be a tragedy," Andres reasoned gently. "You said it yourself—Declan Fulton wasn't her fated partner. Maybe your brother is. They've already created a life together. Doesn't that feel a bit like destiny?"
He pressed a kiss to her temple. "Your brother is a grown man. He knows what he's doing. Instead of stressing over Naomi, maybe we should just wish them the best."
Maeve glared at him. "You're way too relaxed about this. Naomi doesn't even know him!"
Andres offered a wicked, knowing smile.
"You didn't know me the first time you slept in my bed, either."
Maeve narrowed her eyes. "Excuse me? Who slept in whose bed?"
Andres chuckled, his tone turning utterly devoted. "I slept in yours, but the point stands. Come on, gorgeous. Stress is bad for you. Let me take you home."
