Moving like she owned the place, Maeve pushed the door open and took slow, deliberate steps toward Nancy's bed.

For a split second, Nancy had to admit she was terrified.

"Maeve, who let you in here?"

She had been fasting before the surgery, so she was starving, thirsty, and in immense pain from her fresh incision.

Ever since The Four Guardians had been crippled by Maeve, Nancy hadn't had a single capable subordinate by her side.

Faye had tried assigning her new bodyguards, but Nancy had fired them all.

They were too stupid and useless.

Watching Maeve close in on her step by step, Nancy deeply regretted not keeping at least two lackeys around.

Maeve flashed a wicked, sinister smile. "Why am I seeing deep, genuine terror in the eyes of the fearless Miss Grover?"

She violently grabbed Nancy by the chin, forcing her head up, and whispered, "Are you scared of me?"

Nancy instinctively tried to recoil, only to realize she was trapped.

Slowly curling her fingers, Maeve rested her hand lightly over Nancy's chest.

Her voice remained low, almost like a gentle murmur.

"Don't worry. Charlie's heart is still beating inside you, keeping you alive. I won't send you to your grave just yet."

"But keeping you alive doesn't mean I won't collect some interest. Aside from the three fingers I broke, that piece of intestine you lost yesterday was just the second step of my dismantling process."

"You see, killing someone outright is just too boring. There's a reason death by a thousand cuts was invented."

"Your nightmare has only just begun."

Watching Maeve turn to leave, Nancy screamed hoarsely at her back:

"Even if you ruin me, it won't change the fact that your best friend got dumped!"

"You must be furious, Maeve!"

"You get to play the happy couple with Andres, but you dragged Naomi into this mess and broke her heart!"

Maeve paused and looked back at Nancy.

"I should thank you on Naomi's behalf, because she and Declan never had any Marital Fate to begin with."

"I'm genuinely glad your interference saved her from an Ill-fated relationship. She will find true happiness, and you never will."

Stepping out of the ward, Maeve ran straight into Declan.

She hadn't seen him in days. He looked completely unhinged, his face pale and his jaw covered in a dark layer of stubble.
