Because of this, Declan had gotten into a massive fight with his parents.
The end result was yet another round of emotional blackmail.
The ghost of his twin brother, Piers Fulton, who had died at fifteen, was a shadow he could never escape.
Everyone stood on their moral high ground, condemning him for being an ungrateful wretch.
Without Piers's ultimate sacrifice back then, Declan wouldn't have the bright future he enjoyed today.
And so, he had no choice but to compromise, reduced to a puppet controlled by his family.
"Nancy, you've crossed my bottom line."
Nancy didn't care in the slightest about his anger.
"When I was being tortured by Maeve in front of everyone, where were you?"
"Oh, I remember now. You had your arm around Naomi's waist, watching me become a laughingstock right along with them."
Instead of feeling guilty, Declan sneered.
"Given everything you did, did you really think you deserved any sympathy?"
A flash of venomous hatred crossed Nancy's eyes.
"Since I can't have the happiness I want, I'm going to drag everyone who goes against me down to hell with me."
"Nancy, mark my words. If anything happens to Naomi, I'll make you pay with your life."
Leaving that grim warning behind, Declan stormed off in a rage.
This hushed argument was witnessed entirely by Mateo Fulton.
He hadn't expected this either. Just a few days ago, his brother had taken Naomi out to dinner with him.
Now, just days later, the position of his sister-in-law was being handed over to someone else.
Noticing Mateo glaring at her with outright hostility, Nancy looked up and gave him a smile.
"I can see a deep-seated hatred in your eyes."
Mateo couldn't be bothered to entertain her.
"I heard you've killed someone before. And that it was Maeve's close relative."
"I don't even know if you'll live long enough to attend your own wedding. Best of luck."
Nancy seriously suspected Mateo had cursed her.
That very night, she suffered agonizing abdominal pain and was rushed to the hospital by her family, where she was diagnosed with acute intestinal obstruction, requiring immediate surgery.
To alleviate her agony and save her life, Faye signed the surgical consent form.
And just like that, Nancy, tortured by severe abdominal cramps, had a section of her intestines surgically removed.
The procedure went smoothly, but she was ordered to stay in bed and recover for the foreseeable future.
She was admitted to a VIP ward.
As the anesthesia wore off, the incision site throbbed with excruciating pain.
But Nancy was already used to this kind of agony.
The door to her room was pushed open.
Assuming it was the nurse returning with a glass of water, Nancy glanced over, only to freeze as Maeve's face abruptly entered her line of sight.
