Ivy picked up Stella, whose hair was drenched in ice cream and whose little face was swollen like a balloon. She stood up and glared at Patrick and Summer.
"She's just a child. You weren't watching where you were going, and you have the nerve to hit her that hard?"
"Ivy, you..."
Furious, Summer grabbed Patrick's arm, urging him on. "Hit her for me!"
"This bitch thinks she can strut around seducing people just because she has a pretty face. Today I'll—"
Smack!
Before Summer could finish her sentence, Hazel stepped forward and delivered a stinging slap to her face.
The blow left Summer completely stunned. Clutching her throbbing cheek, her face contorted as she screamed, "Who the hell are you? How dare you hit me!"
Hazel hadn't expected to actually strike anyone on her sister's behalf.
She was startled by her own actions, her hand trembling slightly. It would be a lie to say she wasn't scared standing there.
Recognizing Ivy's sister, Patrick realized that if he didn't avenge Summer, she might break up with him and have him kicked out of Foster Group.
He pulled Summer into his protective embrace and raised his hand, ready to strike Hazel.
Ivy's reflexes were razor-sharp. She yanked her sister back and backhanded Patrick with a resounding slap.
"Don't you dare touch my sister."
Patrick froze, turning his gaze toward Ivy.
After all, this was the woman he had loved and dated for five years.
Even though they hadn't crossed certain physical boundaries, they shared countless beautiful, romantic memories.
If reality hadn't crushed them, and if Ivy's parents hadn't caused a massive scene at his house, he would never have cruelly initiated the breakup.
Now, standing there after being slapped by Ivy, he genuinely couldn't bring himself to hit her back.
"Patrick, you coward! Hit her back!"
With both sides of her face stinging, Summer knew she was no match for a tough, small-town girl like Ivy in a physical fight.
Too afraid to retaliate and risk a worse beating, she resorted to furiously egging Patrick on.
Looking at the glaring red mark on Stella's face, she knew there was no hiding it.
Terrified to lie, she immediately began apologizing.
"I'm so sorry, Mr. Foster. I failed to keep a close eye on Stella, and someone hurt her. I'm taking her to the hospital right now."
From his vantage point, Alaric had a perfect view of exactly where Ivy was standing.
"What exactly happened?"
He had seen the entire altercation with his own eyes.
He just wanted to see if his new wife would lie to him.
Ivy told him the absolute truth.
"Stella accidentally bumped into your niece, Summer Vance, and Summer slapped her across the face.
"Her cheek is swollen. I am incredibly sorry, Mr. Foster. This was caused by my carelessness, and I am willing to accept any punishment."
