Raelynn's back was rigid as she held Sebastian's gaze.
His usually cold, detached features now harbored an emotion she had never seen before, swirling in the depths of his striking eyes.
She couldn't pinpoint exactly what that emotion was.
It was complex.
So agonizingly complex that just a single glance made her feel as though her heart was being crushed.
"I've said what I needed to say. Whatever tricks you want to play, bring them on."
Raelynn flatly ignored his comment about her giving birth to his daughter.
"You're so guarded against me," Sebastian scoffed softly.
A shiver of pure apprehension ran down Raelynn's spine. She knew all too well how calculating and ruthless he could be. "Isn't this exactly what the Croix family taught me? Everyone wears masks. I had to learn something just to survive."
"What if I insist my daughter returns to her rightful place?" he suddenly asked, his voice deathly quiet.
Raelynn clenched her fists. "Then I don't mind telling you that you don't have the right, nor the chance. I should also congratulate you. Back when you were so blindly in love with Seraphina, I had you sign a Custody Waiver Agreement. You gave her up yourself. No one forced you."
That exact term.
It made the look in Sebastian's eyes freeze over entirely. "What do you mean?"
Raelynn felt a rare, overwhelming wave of vindication. She curled her lips into a sharp smile, relishing the moment. "Did you forget? When I went to your office to have you sign that agreement, you were so cautious. You were going to read it line by line. You would have seen what was hidden on the later pages. But the moment Seraphina twisted her ankle, you threw all caution out the window. Just to rush to her side, you blew me off and signed it without a second thought. What you signed was a Custody Waiver Agreement. You voluntarily severed your legal ties as a father."
She had choked down these secrets for far too long.
So long that she had grown completely numb to the ache.
The agony of the past finally seemed to find a microscopic outlet in this very second.
It was as if a festering wound was finally being sterilized.
The interior of the car plunged into an eerie, suffocating silence.
