Madeline:
I didn't even realize when I woke up.
When I did, my body felt strangely comfortable, as if I'd had the best sleep of my life.
Then everything came rushing back, especially how Baxter had been beside me.
I lay there for a while, staring at the ceiling.
“How does anyone even know if they're in a coma, living an entire life inside a dream?” I wondered, staring at the ceiling, when I suddenly heard a small voice inside me.
“Well, you don't have to worry about that because you're not in a coma.”
As soon as my wolf woke up, I sat upright, clutching the blanket to my chest.
“What? You seriously think this is all not a dream?”
Her voice was so comforting, as if she was certain what she was saying.
"Lena, you know you're not supposed to joke about things like that," I murmured, my voice cracking.
“Oh, come on, Madeline. In a dream, your wolf wouldn't be talking to you. You know that.”
As her words sank in, I buried my face in my hands and immediately broke down.
"How is this real?" I whispered.
I tried to say more, but nothing came out.
"Baxter is alive," I breathed, as though she didn't already know.
"Madeline, it seems the Moon Goddess was fixing things for us. Afterall, we were the ones who'd been wronged. And don't cry. We never saw his body anyway."
Lena's words made sense.
Everyone had made me believe that Baxter was dead, and with everything else happening around me, I'd ended up believing it too.
It only proved how broken I had been at the time.
But now, I was so happy.
The fact that my husband was alive felt like a miracle, something so impossible that it seemed as though I'd have needed another lifetime just to see it come true.
I mean, of course.
I'd truly started believing that the only way I'd ever see Baxter again was after I died.
I'd even planned to take my own life after a specific age so I could be with him.
But he was alive.
And he was with me.
I still had so many questions that needed answers.
So I decided I'd go to Baxter first and ask him everything.
How had he become President?
Where was Sawyer?
Was he going to come back and destroy our happiness?
I wanted to know it all.
As I got out of bed, I realized I was completely naked.
Heat rushed to my cheeks.
I hadn't been intimate with anyone since he was taken away by the monster, so of course, I felt amazing.
I opened the closet and immediately realized these weren't Sawyer's clothes.
Then I heard a deep, worried voice.
I opened my eyes, and through my blurred, tear-filled vision, I saw Baxter rush over and quickly wrap his arms around me.
The way he held me in his arms felt so real.
He carried me to the living room and gently laid me on the couch.
"Get her some water!" he called, as I began to hyperventilate.
He was gently stroking my cheek when I felt someone touch my arm from the other side.
I looked past Baxter's arm and saw Elara smiling at me.
Then my heart skipped a beat when someone crawled onto the couch from the foot of it.
"Mommy!" Gina shouted, throwing herself at me without any warning, and I felt as though my heart would stop beating.
I stared at her with nothing but confusion.
She felt real.
She had touched me.
She had hugged me.
I started to hyperventilate even more.
"Baby, give her a little space," Baxter urged as he gently lifted Gina into his arms.
She looked at me with her big eyes.
My hands trembled as I reached for her and took her back from Baxter.
Oh, the hug I gave her.
