A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 1071

Faced with Fairfax's words, Starla offered no response. There was no need.

Her silence felt like a heavy stone lodging itself in Fairfax's chest, suffocating him.

They didn't exchange another word for the rest of the journey.

All the way to Yoran.

Yardley had dispatched his men to the airport, but Fairfax never showed up with Starla, leaving Yardley's crew completely empty-handed.

Just as Yardley was seething, his phone rang. It was Fairfax.

"Solrock Dune, out east. You know the place?"

Yardley was currently at his estate. Hearing this, his eyes darkened. "What?!"

Had they already landed? Impossible. He had men watching the airport all day. Every flight was monitored. There was no way Fairfax could have slipped out of the city right under his nose.

"Bring Susanna, and meet me there," Fairfax ordered.

"How did you get there?" Yardley demanded.

"That is none of your concern."

Fairfax's voice was frigid over the line, completely shutting down any further questions. The secrecy felt like a deliberate provocation.

Yardley let out a dark chuckle. "I underestimated you."

"If he wasn't, Starla wouldn't have married him in the first place," Herbert replied, a faint trace of melancholy in his voice.

Yardley shot him a look but said nothing.

"So, what's your plan?" Herbert asked. "Are you actually going to trade Susanna?"

Herbert could tell Yardley had no intention of letting the girl go. But Fairfax had anticipated that. Until he saw Susanna—until she was safely in his hands—he wasn't going to leave Starla behind.

Thinking of Susanna's fragile state, Yardley rubbed his temples, a headache throbbing behind his eyes. He hadn't expected Fairfax to pull a stunt like this.

"Starla is being way too stubborn," Yardley groaned, sounding like a frustrated parent. If she had just come back willingly, none of this would be happening.
