Fairfax lost his temper. "Shut the hell up! You lost her trust, and now you're trying to force me into a corner so I lose her too. You're completely toxic, Herbert!"

"But this is the reality of your situation. What are you going to do?"

It wasn't just some business deal. Fairfax was being forced into an impossible choice. Herbert genuinely wanted to see who Fairfax valued more: his family, or Starla. Secretly, Herbert hoped he'd pick his family, because that would permanently, irrevocably destroy any chance Fairfax had of ever winning Starla back.

"I won't trade her!" Fairfax yelled, his chest heaving.

"Don't tell me that," Herbert said flatly. "Think it over, and then tell Yardley."

The line went dead.

Furious, Fairfax hurled his phone at the wall. It shattered into pieces with a loud crack.

Amos cleared his throat. "Don't let Herbert get in your head. From what I've seen, Yardley actually seems somewhat serious about your sister."

Yardley wasn't the type to joke about marriage. The fact that he was so publicly announcing the wedding and inviting high-profile guests meant something.

Fairfax scoffed bitterly. "He doesn't even have a heart. Do you really think he's capable of being serious about anything?"

Seeing his hesitation, panic flared in Amos's chest. "Don't tell me you're actually considering it? If you do that, no one will ever be able to help you fix things with her!"

Fairfax glared at him. "What kind of nonsense are you spouting? Do you really think I'm that kind of man?"

"I don't know!" Amos threw his hands up. "We're talking about your actual sister here!"

If it were money or territory, Fairfax wouldn't even blink. But this was his little sister.
