Yet, it was Sigrid's own resistance to the past, her refusal to grant Chase a second chance, that now haunted her. Deep down, she knew she had been too harsh, too unforgiving.

She had loved him, this man who had adored her for a lifetime. Now, Chase would never again wrap his arms around her, never again stroke her long hair, and whisper, "Sigrid, it's just a nightmare. Wake up, and I'll still be here..."

Sigrid turned away, looking out at the pouring rain, her own tears mingling with the deluge. "It's your fault, you drove us apart, you're the reason he's dead..."

Deep down, Sigrid knew where the blame truly lay. It was with her, for not heeding the changed heart of Latonia, who had urged her to reconcile, to save Chase from his spiraling health. The real culprit was not her mother but herself, a truth too painful to accept. So, she cast the blame on Latonia instead.

And Latonia, buried in guilt, kept repeating, "Yes, it's my fault, I'm the one who killed him. But Sigrid, no one has signed off on Chase's cremation. You have to pull yourself together, go to the crematorium, and sign the necessary papers..."

Sigrid shook her head in denial, unable to accept that cremating Chase would mean he truly was gone. He lay in the morgue, his body needing to be set free, but she couldn't bring herself to sign.

Yet there was no choice. With heavy heart, she went to the crematorium and, with trembling fingers, signed the paper. As the attendants began to push Chase into the cremator, Sigrid rushed forward and embraced him one last time, sobbing, "Chase, I'm sorry, so sorry..."
