The moment Carlin had left, my thoughts had return to Daisy’s room, and I couldn’t stop thinking about what I had found.
Eventually, I had gone back for the photograph, slip it out from between the pages of the book where I had hidden it before bringing it back to my room.
Now, I stared down at it again, the grainy black and white image wasn’t much to look at, but I couldn’t stop wondering why it had been there in the first place.
Why would Daisy hide an ultrasound photograph inside one of her textbooks? and more importantly..was it hers?
My stomach twisted at the thought
If it was hers, then she had to have been seeing someone, someone she’d never told me about.
But who..
I couldn’t think of a single person, she and I had always told each other everything. At least, I had always believed we did. We talked about school, friends, family, even the stupid little things that happen during the day and the things that mattered.
There had never been room for secrets between us, or so I’d thought. My gaze drops back to the ultrasound, maybe that was what hurt the most, the possibility that I hadn’t known my sister as well as I thought I did.
How could she have kept something this big from me, her being pregnant and never saying a word. My chest tightens and I didn’t even know what I was suppose to feel.
Shock..anger..sadness..confusion, maybe all of it at once, and yet, beneath the confusion, a small flicker of hope that refuses to die
Because if this really belong to Daisy, then maybe it was more than just an ultrasound, it was a clue. something she had left behind without realizing it would one day lead me back to her, that could help me uncover the parts of her life I had never known existed.
I swallowed hard. If Daisy really had been pregnant, then where was the baby and was our parent aware of this as well?
The questions kept coming, one after another, until my thoughts felt like a tangle mess. There were too many questions and nowhere near enough answers.
I rolled onto my side, still clutching the photograph between my fingers as I wish more than anything that she could give me one clue.
Just one, something to tell me where to start, that could finally make sense of all of this.
A knock sounded at my bedroom door, causing me to jolt upright, and my eyes immediately drops to the

I quickly shove it beneath my pillow, probably far more hastily than necessary. my heart hammered against my ribs, the sudden rush of panic making me feel as though i had been caught doing something I had no business doing.
Staring at the pillow for a moment, willing myself to calm down. i drew in a slow breath, straighten my posture, and force my face into something that resembled normal as a nother knock sounded.
“Come in”
The door opens and Dad peeks his head inside, “Hey, sweetie.”
“Hey, Dad.”
He smiles at me before asking, “How was school?”
I tuck a loose strand of hair behind my ear, “School was fine.”
“Good,” he opens the door a little wider, “Just wanted to let you know that dinner is ready.”
Nodding. “Okay,” he started to pull the door shut, but something made me speak before he could, “Dad?”
He pauses, looking back at me, “Yeah?”
Hesitantly, the question already sitting on the tip of my tongue, but suddenly, saying it out loud felt impossible. “Did..Dai..” I stop, my heart began pounding as he waited, his gaze fix on me.
I quickly shook my head. “Never mind, I’m just glad things are going well between us again,” I managed a small smile.
For a moment, he simply looked at me, as if he could tell there was something I wasn’t saying, “Yeah. Me too.” his expression softens, “go wash your hands and come downstairs, your mother will be joining us.”
I gulped, “Okay,” and he smiles before gently closing the door behind him. The moment he was gone, I let out a long breath, dragging my fingers through my hair.
How was I supposed to ask my parents if they knew? I couldn’t exactly walk downstairs and ask, Did you know Daisy was pregnant?
Not without explaining how I had found out and i wasn’t ready to explain that. my eyes drifts toward my pillow where the ultrasound was still hidden and i bit the inside of my cheek, letting out a sigh.
I had no idea how I was going to do this
Pushing myself off the bed, I head for the door, my hand hovering over the doorknob for a moment as 1 glance back at my bed before drawing in a quiet breath, then turn the handle, stepping into the hallway.
My footsteps follows me downstairs, each one carrying me closer to the conversation I still had no idea how to start,, and by the time I reach the dining room, my dad was already there, pulling out a chair for my mother.

Her eyes flickers toward me, but barely acknowledges me before looking away, and I did the same. When I looked at my dad, he was smiling at me which I return with a faint smile before taking the seat across from my mother.
My dad moved around the table, serving food onto my mother’s plate before doing the same for me, “Bon appétit.”
“Thanks,” I murmured as we started eating.
or at least, they did
I barely touch my food, pushing it around my plate, moving pieces from one side to the other without actually taking a bite. My stomach was too twisted to feel hungry and all I could think about was the question I desperately needed an answer to.
I picked up my glass, taking a slow sip of water as my gaze move between my parents. They seem completely absorbed in their meals as I lower the glass, spending a few more seconds pushing my food around my plate,, trying to gather the courage to ask what had been circling my mind since I got down here.
Finally, I spoke. “Dad?”
His attention immediately shifted to me, “Yeah?”
“Can I ask you something?”
“Of course,” my mother continued eating, seemingly uninterested in the conversation.
I stared down at my plate, “It’s about Daisy,” the movement beside me stopped and the faint clink of cutlery against porcelain disappears. I could feel my mother’s attention shift toward me without even looking up. causing me to gulp.
“Was Daisy.. seeing someone when she was alive?”
My dad’s brows pull together. “What do you mean?”
I continued picking at my food, suddenly nervous under his questioning gaze, “Like..did she have a boyfriend?” I finally look up to see my dad genuinely confused.
My mother, however, remains completely still, her expression having nothing away..almost too little. But then I notice it, the subtle tightening of her jaw.
