Gloria woke to an empty bed, the passage of time lost to her. Ulrik was gone, leaving no trace of where he’d slipped away to.
Staring at the ceiling, she couldn’t help but curse her rotten luck.
Ulrik had completely checked out and turned into a walking corpse, dragging himself to his shift at the Palace like a ghost. Lycan Erasmus, who once had high hopes for him, wouldn’t give him the time of day anymore.
To make matters worse, Adelaide’s Independent She–Wolf Center was currently the talk of the town. Now, even high–society pack matrons in New York couldn’t stop gossiping about the she- wolves Adelaide was taking in.
But what really made Gloria’s blood boil was Sabrina. After getting kicked out of Winslow’s pack, Sabrina had crawled right back to the Bloodmoon Pack.
Gloria had taken her in out of the kindness of her own heart, but the ungrateful bitch hadn’t shown a shred of appreciation. Instead, Sabrina’d been running her mouth across the pack territory, gleefully telling everyone how Gloria had been rejected in the past.
In Sabrina’s twisted mind, her brother Ulrik was the ultimate Alpha, and no she–wolf in New York was worthy of him. She honestly believed Gloria should be kissing the ground he walked on, slaving away for the pack just for the privilege of being his Luna.
What Sabrina didn’t know was that the Bloodmoon Pack’s accounts had been bled dry by Rosemary’s medical bills. They could barely afford to keep the lights on, let alone run a pack.
Drowning in all this drama, Gloria had genuinely considered packing her bags and leaving. But she never expected Ulrik to agree without a second thought, which had left her utterly stunned.
Given her wealthy and powerful family background, Gloria had always carried herself with pride. She figured that with the Bloodmoon Pack in ruins, Ulrik would be groveling at her feet, begging her to use her connections so Alpha Tad might throw them a bone.
Yet, Ulrik actually wanted a break. Not a single trace of regret in his eyes.
“Luna… are you really leaving the pack?” Ruby, an Omega waiting by the bed, asked with eyes full of worry the moment she saw Gloria stir.

Gloria wasn’t about to admit she had only said it to hurt him.

“What is there to stay for?” she spat coldly. “It’s a run–down, broke–ass dump that’s become the laughingstock of the entire New York. Am I seriously supposed to rot away here for the rest of my life?”
Ruby hesitated, shifting her weight. “I’m just afraid… Christine won’t let you walk away that easily.
The second she heard that name, Gloria’s temper flared. Her scent spiked, filling the room with the bitter, burnt stench of angry pheromones.
“What is she to me? Nothing but a discarded bitch! If I choose to leave, my mother will back me up!”
“But… I still think Alpha Ulrik loves you,” Ruby whispered, trying to smooth things over. “He didn’t mean to reject you. He was just speaking out of anger. Maybe… maybe we could ask Alpha Isaiah to talk some sense into him? Or have Christine reason with him?”
Gloria shut down the idea at once when she thought of how many times Christine had humiliated her in front of the pack.
Besides, a deep, hollow disappointment was settling in Gloria’s chest. What had she even done wrong? How dare Ulrik treat her like this?
Back in the Ironclaw Pack, her life had been one of pure luxury. But here? She hadn’t gone on a single shopping spree for new clothes in years.
She had also stopped showing up to the other Lunas‘ afternoon teas altogether, terrified they would see right through her fading lifestyle and mock her behind her back.
Yet, she had done her duty. She had kept this pack running while Ulrik was rotting in the dungeons.
What more did he want from her?
But if she actually left the Bloodmoon Pack, where would she go?
Bringing up Eugene had been pure spite. He had already rejected her to her face; there was no going back to him.
And Melvin? That was just a one–night stand between consenting adults to scratch an itch. There were no promises there.
Besides, Melvin had his own mate now. What would she be if she crawled back to him? A secret

mistress? No way. D
Unable to find a way out, Gloria decided to dig her heels in. A cold war it would be.
She closed her eyes, exhaustion washing over her.
“Not a word to anyone about my fight with Alpha Ulrik tonight,” she ordered Ruby flatly. “And tomorrow, fetch the healer. Tell them I’m under the weather and need total isolation for a while.”
“Yes, Luna,” Ruby replied.
She bowed her head and stepped out, secretly bewildered, “One minute she’s screaming about leaving, and the next she’s staying?” But she knew better than to question a Luna.
The next morning, Ulrik stood outside the gates of the Blackthorn Pack.
He wasn’t here for Adelaide this time. He was here for Lance.
When Lance walked out, he spotted Ulrik immediately, hovering near the stone wall. The man looked like a walking corpse–pale, hollow–cheeked, and completely broken.
Lance nodded to Tommy, gesturing for him to go see what the wreck wanted.
Ulrik practically scrambled over, bowing his head in a submissive gesture. “Alpha Lance.”
Lance assessed him with a cold, sweeping gaze. “Alpha Ulrik. How can I help you?”
Ulrik swallowed hard, hesitating before he finally forced the words out. “Alpha Lance… can you tell me if the Western Tribe has executed Velda yet?”
Lance hadn’t forgotten how Ulrik’d blocked Adelaide at the palace study door, and he made no effort to hide his cold contempt now.
“How should I know? Go ask someone else.”
“Alpha Lance!” Ulrik blocked his path, his voice cracking into a desperate plea.
“I know your intel is the best. I made mistakes–terrible mistakes–and I admit them all. But please, considering I fully cooperated with the interrogation regarding Velda, just tell me what happened to her.”
