They’d all assumed she was simply shy and easily flustered. As it turned out, she was a forced match herself.
That realization hit Malory like a bolt of lightning, and her eyes lit up with pure, brilliant delight.
“Don’t forget,” she said, her voice climbing, “Ava got matched with five men. If the first one is someone at Laurent’s level, the other four aren’t going to be ordinary either. I’d bet anything some of them are forced matches too.”
The more Malory thought about it, the more gleeful she became. This was the most sensational piece of gossip she’d stumbled into in years.
“Who are the other four going to be?” she went on, practically vibrating. “I can’t even wrap my head around it anymore. Honestly? At this point, anyone is possible.” She had the exact same electric thrill she got from following her favorite celebrities.
up the Malory pulled up her Holoband right there, logged onto the Stellar Network, and called globally voted list of the world’s most eligible bachelors. She scanned the long column of names and declared, “I’d believe any of them at this point.”
Naomi glanced at the list and shook her head. “That list is completely wrong. Ava was matched through the local Match Bureau. The system here doesn’t sync with international registries. Pull up the local one instead.”
Malory scratched her head. “Oh, right. Let me find it real quick.”
She switched over to the domestic eligible bachelor rankings and looked around at her friends. “Should we put a bet on it? See if anyone can guess?”
Naomi shook her head. “Not me. There’s no way to call it. The odds are way too small. If we hadn’t run into them today, it never would’ve crossed my mind that the Chief Instructor and Ava could end up matched.”
Zoey leaned over and peered at Malory’s Holoband. “It really is impossible to guess. Hey, Noelle, didn’t you run into Ava and her match walking around campus that one time? Was it Laurent?”
Noelle shook her head. “It definitely wasn’t the Chief Instructor. The energy was completely different. It was late at night anyway, so I couldn’t see clearly, and the guy had a mask and sunglasses on. No idea what he looked like.

“A few months,” Laurent said, looking at her intently. “Once your competition is over later this year, I’ll really have to return to my unit. It’s only because the two big shots at the top are fighting so hard right now that I was able to squeeze out this much time.”
“Take your time eating,” Ava said. “I’m going to go change.”
When she came back downstairs, she found Laurent at the sink washing the dishes. She walked to the kitchen door and watched him. “So, are you going to be the one in charge of my training now?”
He placed the clean plate on the drying rack and turned to her with a nod. “Yes. Let’s go take a look at the training room first.”

Ava led the way, and Laurent followed. They reached a large private gym on the second floor. After a quick scan, Laurent remarked, “Mason certainly knows how to find a good place for you.”

Ava had been swamped lately. The first semester was winding down, and starting June 17th, exams rolled in one after another. Some of the less important subjects held their assessments right in class.
Today was the last session of Keith’s elective, and it doubled as the final exam.
The papers had already been handed out. The moment Joselyn got hers, she shot Ava a look absolutely loaded with meaning. The message was impossible to miss.
Ava accepted her paper and let out a small, deliberate cough.
