She had struggled this desperately just to remain alive, yet the life she kept was one with no dignity left in it. She had clawed and scraped for something-anything-she could hold on to, only to discover that in the end, nothing had ever really belonged to her.
“I don’t think anyone would even dare accept my divorce case,” Queenie said quietly. “The Yeager family holds too much power. Ordinary people can’t afford to offend them.”
She lowered her eyes. “And because they raised me, everyone else thinks I should be grateful to them.”
Ava’s temper flared instantly. “Grateful for what? Yes, they took you in, but they treated you like a servant!, Why should you care what people like that think? I refuse to believe the Yeager family can cover the whole sky with one hand!”
The more she spoke, the angrier she became.
“You’re already in this condition, and those two still don’t feel even a little guilty!”
Queenie looked at her and slowly shook her head. “Ava, you don’t understand the world they live in. The Yeager family has connections everywhere.”
Ava turned and looked at Ethan.
He gave her a small nod.
Only then did Ava fully understand what Queenie was afraid of-and the helplessness buried underneath.
that fear.
“But if you stay with them,” Ava said, voice tightening, “one day they’re going to torture you to death!”
At that moment, Ava suddenly thought of the painting she had seen in Queenie’s dorm before-the one titled ‘The Sacrificed Girl.’
It had felt strange to her back then. Now she finally understood.
That painting had been Queenie all along.
Queenie raised a hand and covered her eyes, “Ava, thank you. But it’s late. You should go back. You still have class tomorrow.”
Seeing her like this made Ava’s chest ache. “Queenie, Professor Montclair said that if you need help, he’s willing to help you.”
Queenie shook her head again. “Ava, I can’t drag innocent people into this.”
Even if Sebastian really dared to take the case, she still would not dare accept.
She had lived under the Yeager family’s roof for too many years. She knew exactly what kind of people they were.

That family was rotten all the way down, full of things that could never be dragged into the light. She could not let innocent people get pulled into that abyss with her.
A divorce? Can I truly get free of this marriage in this lifetime? Can I ever really escape the Yeager family?,
All Queenie could see in front of her was darkness.
The single sentence she had thrown out earlier, that she wanted a divorce, had already taken nearly everything she had left.
To Jerome, those words had meant nothing. Just another outburst. Just meaningless resistance.
And because Queenie knew him too well, she knew exactly why he had reacted the way he did.
That sentence had angered him.
But so what?
If he could drop dead from anger, that would be perfect.
But he would not.
And as for her, her body was still alive, but her heart had died long ago. If time could rewind, she would rather have died with her family in that war.
Then she would never have had to endure this nightmare.
“Queenie!” Ava started again, unwilling to stop.
Ethan interrupted gently. “Ava, let Ms. Yates rest for now. It’s late, and you have class tomorrow. We should
go.”
Then he looked at Queenie and said calmly, “Ms. Yates, I’m Ethan Brock, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Sebastian is a friend of mine. If he says he’s willing to help you, then he means it.”
His tone remained even and measured as he added, “I understand what you’re afraid of. But wanting to break free from the Yeager family does not mean there is no way out. Ms. Yates, think about it carefully.”
After that, he said nothing more.
Queenie was not foolish. She would understand the meaning behind his words.
In the end, she gave a slight nod. “Alright. I understand.”
Then her eyes shifted to Ava. “Mr. Brock is your…”
“My future fiance,” Ava answered.
A faint smile touched Queenie’s mouth. “Good. The two of you look right together.”
After they left the hospital and got into the car, Ava still could not shake off the heaviness in her chest.

“The first time I met her at school, I thought she was incredible,” Ava said quietly. “She told me she studied forensic science. I remember thinking a girl who chose that field was really amazing. She also said she was a war orphan, and I felt awful for what she had already been through.
“But I never imagined her life could be this miserable after that. She’s even an Awakened, and she still had to suffer like this.”
Ethan drove in silence.
He knew much more than Ava did, but he had no intention of telling her about the uglier parts.
After some time, he finally said, “Ava, when someone falls into mud, some people get buried in it. Some fight their way back out. Queenie isn’t weak. She won’t simply give up on herself. I believe she’ll find her way to daylight eventually.”
Other than Monday’s visit, Ava did not go back to see Queenie until Wednesday afternoon, after her classes ended.
The bruising on Queenie’s face had faded so much that if someone saw her now, they would never guess what she had gone through only two days earlier.
This time, Ava came alone.
She had not even eaten dinner first. She carried a bouquet into the room and set it down.
“Queenie, did you eat yet?”
Queenie shook her head. “Not yet. I don’t really feel hungry. Why did you come over so early?”
“I came straight from class,” Ava said. Then she smiled a little. “In that case, let’s order something and eat together.”
