Soon, they stood outside Luca’s office. Marco knocked once, waited for the low command from within, then opened the door.
Luca was behind his desk. "Mr Kane," Luca said, leaning back in his chair. "I hear I became your favourite person while I was gone. They do say you don’t know what you have, until its gone."
Winn stepped into the office and took the room in at a glance. "Don’t flatter yourself...I came here to do you a favour."
Luca chuckled. Disbelief etched into his voice. "You?" Luca asked. "You want to do me a favour? Are we in some kind of mirror dimension?" Luca spread one hand across his desk. "In case you have forgotten, I do the favours."
"Oh, not your kind of favours." Winn settled into the chair opposite him.
Luca tapped one finger against his desk. "What’s this about?"
"Believe me, there are no strings attached," Winn said.
Luca leaned back in his chair, eyes narrowed. "No strings," he repeated.
"No strings."
"How generous."
"You did me a solid. You saved me," Winn continued. "You saved my wife. This is me being grateful."
"Speak," Luca said.
"The police are asking questions."
"What kind of questions?" Luca asked.
"Specific ones." Winn rested one hand on the arm of the chair, his posture still relaxed, though his eyes had lost every trace of dry amusement. "I got the first visit. Then Ivy. After that, I heard from two people. Then a third. All people who, in one way or another, have crossed paths with you." his mouth hardened. "Or come to you for help."
Police fishing expeditions happened all the time. But specific questions around Luca’s favours meant someone had drawn a map.
"They are fishing," Winn said. "And it won’t be long before they hook something."
Luca’s fingers tapped against the desk. When he did, it meant his mind had already gone to work. "You’re afraid I will give you up if the police ever get me."
"Luca," Winn said, almost gently, "you insult me." He looked irritated that Luca had chosen the cheapest interpretation available. "You’re coming to the wrong conclusions. I am not here because I think you will fold under police pressure. I may dislike your methods, but I do not think you are stupid."
"I am here because someone is rounding up people who have come to ask you for favours." Winn stood then, smoothing one hand down the front of his jacket. "I’d look inside your circle."
Luca’s eyes darkened as he rose slowly. "I just realised something, Mr Kane."
Winn looked at him. as he walked around the desk, each step carrying that easy violence that made even confident men remember they had bones.
"You are the one I should be most wary of. You and your wife," Luca added. "You are the only outsiders who have been in my special room."
"I did what I had to do to protect my family," Winn said.
Luca stopped in front of him. The two men held each other’s gaze.
"I am not afraid of the consequences," Winn continued. "I’d do it over and over again without regrets."
It was the language Luca understood.
Family.
Protection.
