"Come on. Have a drink with me." Massimo said.
"I have to—"
"Your wife is with Carol," Massimo said, cutting him off, "getting ready to pick up her sister from the airport."
Luca’s head snapped back. "Should she even be going out?"
"She needs the air. You of all people know if you try to lock her in this house like a fragile little saint, she will make your life unbearable."
That, unfortunately, sounded like Veronica.
Massimo poured two drinks and handed one to Luca. "Come on."
Luca accepted the glass.
"Your mother thinks your problem is because you are afraid."
"Shouldn’t I be?" Luca asked, his voice sharper than he intended. "Considering everything that has happened."
"You should be afraid," Massimo said. "Any man with something precious to lose should be afraid. But that is not the whole of it. I think your fear has nowhere to go. Your anger too."
Luca gave a cold little laugh. "My anger has many places to go. One of them is currently chained underground."
"Yes, David will suffer. As he should." Massimo’s voice held no pity there. "But I am not talking about David."
"Then perhaps you should start. I prefer that topic."
"I think it is because you have no one to transfer that anger to," Massimo said. "The anger from losing a child. The helplessness. The failure you think belongs to you. Since there is no enemy you can drag into a room and punish for it, you aim it at yourself."
Luca rolled his eyes and sank into the nearest sofa. "Everyone is a therapist now."
"It is one luxury people like us do not have. We make do with what we do have. Each other."
Luca’s mouth curved with immediate disgust. "Does that make you and Mother my therapists now? Because I would rather eat glass."
Massimo chuckled. "Your mother would be better at it than I am."
"I would rather season the glass and eat it."
Massimo smiled faintly, but it faded soon enough. "Luca, you are a sociopath with a dash of crazy. You always want someone to pay. That is how you make sense of pain. Someone bleeds, and the world balances again. You took the role of the devil for a reason, grant desires in exchange for favours. Offer people what they want and collect what they owe."
"In most cases, your anger has a body," Massimo said. "A man. A woman. A traitor. An enemy. Someone you can hunt. Someone you can break. But with the baby you lost...There was no one. In this case...your anger is directed at yourself. So, punish yourself."
Luca chuckled darkly. "Yes, good idea. I’ll just strap myself to your electric chair and turn the switch on." He took a drink because the conversation had become unbearable.
"Anything to give your dick a kick."
Luca nearly choked. He lowered the glass slowly, staring at his father with open betrayal. "Can we stop talking about my dick?"
"I would love to. But the matter appears relevant."
Luca closed his eyes. "I hate this family."
Massimo’s amusement faded. "I wish you had come to me earlier. This would have been resolved. The answer is simple, Luca. Punish yourself. You need to acknowledge the guilt, punish it, and leave it where it belongs. In the past. And I have a splendid idea," Massimo added.
"God, no."
"I planned to run into traffic, but since you asked nicely..." Vee waved at Luca and Massimo, then headed out with Marco. Luca watched her until she disappeared through the doorway, then continued staring long after she was gone.
Luca turned slowly and exhaled. "Fine...You win. Arrange it."
Massimo’s smile became positively dangerous. "I promise you are going to love it."
"I already hate it."
Massimo chuckled, clearly delighted.

Valentina arrived at the Genovese mansion later that day. Carol came forward first, eyes already wet at the sight of Matteo in Marco’s arms.
Vee entered beside them, moving slowly but smiling. Before Luca could prepare himself for it, Valentina crossed the foyer and wrapped him in a hug.
To say he was shocked would have been an insult to understatement. He was the walking catastrophe she had spent months blaming for half her problems.
One arm lifted awkwardly, then settled around her back. "Okay," he drawled. "Happy to see you too, Val." Luca looked over her head at Vee. His wife stood near Marco, smiling.
Marco held Matteo against his chest.
"Thank you." she whispered to him.
"She’s my wife, my life. While its appreciated, a thank you is insulting Val."
"I understand." she said and stepped back. "Are you okay? Vee said you suffered some injuries too."
