Two Can Play (Celeste and Dominic) novel Chapter 48

Chapter 48

He microwaved two plates, the same kind of pre-prepared meals the hotel kitchen left stocked in the fridge, and set them on the table. We sat. He picked up his fork and I watched him try to use his injured arm and put it down again.

“Is your arm in pain?” I asked.

“It is fine.”

“You just put your fork down.”

He looked at me.

“I will feed you,” I told him.

He smiled, slow and immediate, and held out the fork.

I fed him. It should have felt strange and it did not feel strange at all, which was its own kind of problem. He kept looking at me while I did it, that steady unhurried attention, and I kept my eyes on the food and told myself there was nothing significant about feeding an injured man his dinner.

“Thank you,” he said when the plate was done.

“Pick out clothes for yourself.” He pushed back from the table. “I will shower and then take you home.”

I went to the wardrobe.

The black dress caught my eye immediately. Short, body-hugging, the kind of cut that stopped at the thigh and left very little of the neckline to the imagination.

Control yourself, Celeste. The man is injured, for God’s sake.

He seemed to register something in my expression, the way he always did, and the corner of his mouth

moved.

“How do you manage to look sexy in everything you wear?”

I straightened up. “I’ll say it’s a gift. I was born this way.”

“Then congratulations are in order,” he returned.

I laughed before I could stop it.

He got dressed. Black t-shirt, black jeans, nothing complicated, nothing that required any effort whatsoever. I watched him and thought, of course. Of course only Dominic Ford could make a black t- shirt and jeans look like that.

“Ready?” he asked.

I nodded.

I should have said yes the first time he asked me to stay the night, I thought.
