By the eleventh time it happened, I could not hold my tongue anymore.
"What is the need of all this?" I asked as he pulled away from the curb. "Holding my hand, opening doors for me like a gentleman. Those are not things you usually do."
"Maybe I am full of surprises."
"Maybe you are trying to make a point." I crossed my arms. "You are married to Tasha, even if it is only in name. People will get the wrong idea. Tasha does not deserve to be embarrassed in public because her husband is parading another woman around town."
He was quiet for a moment, and when he spoke his voice had changed, gone careful. "All your life, you have only ever worried about Tasha. Maybe you have been conditioned to only worry about Tasha. It is so engraved in you that you cannot think about anything else." He glanced at me. "But Scarlett, sometimes you should think about yourself too."
"When have I ever said I was not thinking about myself?"
"Okay." He nodded. "Then tell me. What are your plans for your life?"
"Why? You want to have this conversation now? We just came out of one of your clubs. Do you not have others to get to?"
"I am not in a hurry. I want to hear." He turned the wheel slowly. "Once this contract is over, in a year, what do you plan to do?"
I scoffed. "As if I would share that with you."
"I want to know. Do not worry, I have no desire to ruin your plans."
"Fine." I uncrossed my arms. "Once the year is over and Tasha is settled somewhere safe, I will..."
