Back inside, the security room felt too quiet, the screens glowing blue in the dark. I pulled up the feed and watched it twice, Castro stepping out of the car, Sharon beside him, his men fanning out, the shots, the men falling, Castro dragged into the car and driven away. I copied it onto a drive, and then I made the first call. It was a friend from college who was now a detective.

He picked up on the second ring, his voice rough with sleep. "Celeste. This is a surprise."

"I am reporting a crime, Officer. Attempted kidnapping, assault, and a public disturbance involving more than twenty armed men outside Helix Laboratory."

There was a long pause. "Are you alright?"

"I am. I have footage. I am sending it to you now."

"Send it. We can meet tomorrow to talk about the case."

"I will be there."

I sent the footage, then I made the second call, to the best criminal lawyer I knew. He answered on the first ring. "Miss. Adams. It is late. What is wrong?"

After we exchanged pleasantries, I went straight to the point. "I need you to take on a case. I am sending you a video. I want the people in it charged and brought to court. I'd like to meet with you tomorrow."

"Send it over. What time tomorrow?"

"Nine in the morning. I will come to your office."

"I will be ready."
