Two Can Play (Celeste and Dominic) novel Chapter 406

SPARROW

The bathroom was the size of a small apartment. Scarlett stepped under the water and the spray hit her shoulders and ran down the long curve of her back, and I stood there with my hands at my sides feeling like a boy who had been handed something he did not know how to hold.

She turned her head, water streaming off her jaw. "Are you going to stand there all night, or are you coming in?"

I stepped under the spray and the heat hit my chest like a wall, and she moved to make room for me, which put her body a breath away from mine, close enough that the warmth of her skin reached me through the steam. The water ran between us and neither of us moved, and I did not know what to do with my hands, so I kept them where they were.

She reached for the soap first. Her hands came up to my chest, slick with lather, and she worked it into my skin in slow circles, over the ink on my arms, across my shoulders, down my stomach, and the strangeness of it sat heavy in my chest. No woman had ever washed me. No woman had ever been close enough to try. I had spent my life keeping people at a distance where they could not reach me, and here she was, palms flat against my chest, washing me like she had done it a hundred times, and I let her.

"Your turn," she said, and pressed the soap into my hand.
