The dining room was vast, all dark wood and soft amber light, with a table long enough to seat an army and windows that looked out onto the black water of a pool. We took our seats in silence, and Madam Lily reached for the small bags we carried.

"Give me those, dears. I will take them up to your room."

"Don't worry," I said, setting my bag on the floor beside my chair. "We will carry them ourselves."

The woman nodded, understanding passing over her face like a cloud, and left. A few minutes later, three maids came in with trays and served us, plates heaped with food I had not realized I was starving for until the smell hit me. I ate. Maya ate. Jasmine ate like she had not seen food in a week. Only Tasha pushed her plate around without taking a single bite.

"You are not hungry?" I asked.

"I am full. I had dinner earlier. Remember?"

I looked at her and nodded.

After dinner, Madam Lily led us up the same stairs Sparrow had taken, down a long hallway lined with doors, and into a room that made me stop in the doorway. It was enormous, all soft cream and gold light, with two king-sized beds dressed in white linen that looked like clouds, a wardrobe that ran the length of one wall, a vanity with a round mirror, and a bathroom behind glass doors that glowed like a jewel box. The carpet swallowed my footsteps, and the air smelled of fresh linen and something floral I could not name.

Madam Lily opened the wardrobe and stepped back, and I stared at row after row of clothes, dresses and tops and jeans in every color, shoes lined up beneath them, bags on the top shelf, and a basket of toiletries and feminine products on the vanity.

"I did not know exactly what you all liked," she said, "but the master told me to shop for his female guests, so I bought a little of everything. Make yourselves at home. If you need me, use the landline on the nightstand. If you need the master, he is in the room right next door. You can knock."

We thanked her, and she wished us a good evening and closed the door behind her with a soft click.

The moment the door shut, I claimed the bed on the left. "Tasha, you are with me. Maya, Jasmine, you take the other one."
