Chapter 349
I smiled at her, and the smile felt strange on my face, like a muscle I had forgotten how to use. Dominic had woken up and was watching me with that calm, careful attention of his.
“Good morning, Dominic,” I said.
“Good morning, Pat.” His voice was warm. “How are you feeling today?”
I looked at him, at this man who had carried Celeste’s world on his shoulders and still had room for me, and the answer came out before I could think about it. “Like I’m lucky to have wonderful people like you two looking after me.”
Dominic smiled, and I turned back to Celeste, who was still staring at me with that haunted look. I opened my mouth to speak, and then my eyes caught the ring on her finger, and the words I had been about to say vanished entirely.
“Oh my God!” I shrieked, and Celeste flinched so hard she nearly fell off the bed. “Did Dominic put a ring on it?”
Celeste let out a long breath and nodded, her hand coming up to show me properly.
I pulled her into a warm hug, laughing through the tears that were still drying on my cheeks. “Congratulations. I mean it. Deep down, I was still scared Dominic wouldn’t do right by you, you know?”
“I’m right here, you know?” Dominic said, and I laughed.
Celeste looked back at him with a smile, then turned to me. “Yeah. In the end, he decided to make an honest woman out of me.”
We both laughed, and Dominic got to his feet with a dramatic sigh. “Alright. I’ll leave you girls to your gossip while I go get breakfast ready for my favorite person in the world… and her bestie.”
Celeste blew him a kiss from where she sat, and he caught it in a funny gesture, closing his fist around the air and tucking it into his jacket pocket before he walked out of the room. I watched him go, and then I turned back to Celeste, reaching for her hand to admire the ring.
“You’re so lucky,” I said, and I meant it with every part of me. “You have no idea…”
“Enough about me.” She cut me off, and her expression turned serious so fast it gave me whiplash. “Tell me the truth, Pat. What happened?”
I opened my mouth to explain, and then the door swung open and the doctor came in. We exchanged greetings, the polite little rituals of a hospital morning, and he asked how I was doing. He checked the monitors, adjusted the IV, and said I would be discharged in no time. Then he straightened up, and I saw something flicker across his face that made my stomach drop.
“I have very important information to share with you both,” he said.
“Go ahead, Doctor.” Celeste’s hand tightened around mine.
The doctor was silent for a long moment, and the silence filled the room like water. Then he spoke, and each word landed like a stone dropped into that silence. “The ultrasound showed a gestational sac, which implies that the pregnancy is still ongoing.”
I felt a lump rise in my throat, hard and sharp. “What exactly do you mean by ongoing, Doctor?”
He shifted his weight, and I saw him choose his words with care. “What I mean to say is that, Miss Spears, you are

still pregnant.”
My heart stopped. The room tilted, and for a moment I was not sure I had heard him at all. “What?”
