“You are seriously arresting me?” Were the first words I threw at the man who had just cuffed me.

“Mrs. Fisher, you have been accused of assaulting a pregnant woman, and that woman has lost her baby. Until we establish exactly what happened, we have to take the accusation seriously.” Officer Rivera was the one who responded.

I drew in a slow breath. “Officer Rivera, I was the one who called you.”

“I understand that.”

“No, I don’t think you do.” I lifted my cuffed hands slightly. “I called the police because I witnessed a crime. I rushed Sierra to this hospital myself. I stayed here while the doctors tried to save her. I answered every question they asked me, and now I am being treated like the criminal?”

“I am not saying you are guilty.”

“Then why am I in handcuffs?”

She hesitated, and I held her gaze. “I would hardly call the police myself if I knew I had committed the crime. That would require a level of stupidity I like to think I have not yet achieved.”

The male officer who had cuffed me cleared his throat, but I caught the faintest twitch at the corner of his mouth before he composed himself again.

I continued before anyone could interrupt me. “Sierra has just lost her baby. She is delirious with grief and bloodloss, and she has been given medication. You cannot seriously take her accusation against me at face value when I am the person who brought her here and did everything I could to save her.”

Officer Rivera’s expression remained professional. “I understand your position, Mrs. Fisher. Unfortunately, even if everything you are saying is true, you have been accused of a serious crime. We have to take you to the station and question you.”

“Fine.” Her eyebrows lifted slightly, and I lowered my hands. “I have nothing to hide. I will answer every question you ask. But please take these off. I am a law–abiding citizen, not a criminal, and I would rather not walk through this hospital in handcuffs.”

One of the male officers went out and within three minutes, he returned with the doctor. The doctor was still wearing surgical scrubs, his face set in the particular expression of a medical professional who had been summoned away from actual patients to deal with police theatrics and was not happy about it.

“I cannot clear this patient for questioning.” He folded his arms across his chest and looked at Sierra with the mixture of exasperation and concern that doctors reserved for patients who pulled out their own IVs. “She has lost a significant amount of blood, she is in no condition to be upright, and she could lose consciousness at any moment. She needs to be in bed with fluids and monitoring, not at the station giving statements.”
