Two Can Play (Celeste and Dominic) novel Chapter 308

Chapter 308

The cab pulled up in front of the Beaumont, and I paid the driver with a handful of crumpled bills and led Maya and Jasmine around the side of the building to the service entrance I had used earlier, the same route I had taken when I slipped out of the hotel what felt like a lifetime ago. The kitchen staff were still too busy to notice three more women moving through their chaos, and we made it to the service elevator without attracting any attention.

The elevator ride was silent. I could feel the exhaustion settling into my bones like lead, my body finally registering the toll that the night had taken on it, the adrenaline crash hitting me in waves that made my eyelids heavy and my limbs slow. But I could not rest yet. Not until I had seen Tasha, not until I had made sure she was safe, not until I had delivered Maya and Jasmine to Sparrow and fulfilled my end of the bargain.

The elevator doors slid open on the penthouse floor, and I stepped out into the corridor with Maya and Jasmine behind me. The door to Sparrow’s suite was closed, but that was normal. I raised my hand to knock, then hesitated. Something was wrong. I could not have said what it was, exactly, but the air felt different, felt empty in a way that it had not felt when I left earlier that night. I knocked anyway, three sharp raps that echoed in the quiet

corridor.

No answer.

I knocked again, harder this time. “Sparrow? Tasha?”

Silence.

I tried the door handle. It turned, the door swinging open to reveal the penthouse suite exactly as I had left it, the lights still on, the furniture still in place, the city still glittering beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows. But the suite was empty. Sparrow was gone. Tasha was gone. There was no note, no message, no indication of where they had gone or when they would be back.

My heart, which had been beating at a steady rhythm since I left Julian’s apartment, began to race.

“Scarlett?” Maya’s voice was small behind me. “Where are they?”

I turned to face her and Jasmine, and I could feel the panic rising in my chest like floodwater, cold and dark and impossible to hold back. I had left Tasha here. I had left her with a man I barely knew, a man with a reputation for violence and cruelty and a complete disregard for anyone who was not useful to him, and now they were both gone, vanished without a trace, and I had no idea where they had gone or whether Tasha was safe or whether I had just made the worst mistake of my life.

“Something is wrong,” I said, and my voice sounded distant to my own ears, like it was coming from someone else entirely. “Something has happened to Tasha.”

I ran back toward the elevator, my heels loud against the floor, and I did not look back to see if Maya and Jasmine were following.
