Chapter 296
The guards escorted me to the apartment in silence. I had already made up my mind. Jasmine was going to have to take the hit.
I did not like it. Jasmine was abrasive and she had a mouth on her that could strip paint, but she did not deserve what Julian was going to do to her any more than the rest of us deserved what had been done to us. But if I had to choose between Jasmine and Tasha, the choice was not really a choice at all. It was arithmetic.
Tasha was my blood, my responsibility, the last living piece of Lynette that existed in this world, and I would burn down every bridge I had ever crossed to keep her safe. Jasmine would survive Julian. She was tough in ways that Tasha was not, hardened in ways that Tasha had never had to be, and if I had to sacrifice her comfort to protect Tasha’s innocence, then that was exactly what I was going to do.
The apartment was dark when I stepped inside, the living room lit only by the pale glow of the city filtering, through the curtains. I went straight to the bedroom, where I knew I’d find Jasmine and locked the door.
I crossed the room and sat down across from her, and for a long moment neither of us said anything.
“You look like shit,” she said finally.
“Thank you. I was going for ‘devastatingly beautiful but slightly traumatized,’ but I’ll take ‘shit’ if that’s what’s on offer.”
Jasmine snorted, a sound that was halfway between a laugh and a dismissal. “You’ve been with a wild man.”
“What gave it away? The sex hair or the fact that I can barely walk straight?”
“Both.” She leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms over her chest. “Was it Julian again?”
“Sparrow.” I whispered.
The name landed in the space between us like a grenade with the pin pulled. Jasmine’s eyes went wide, then narrowed, then went wide again. She opened her mouth, closed it, opened it again. I watched her work through the implications, the calculations, the questions that were piling up behind her teeth like cars in a traffic jam.
“Sparrow,” she repeated, almost inaudibly, looking in the direction of Maya and Tasha who were sleeping. “As in the Sparrow? The one who supposedly runs half the underworld? The one who nobody can find unless he wants to be found?”
“The very same.”
“And you just… what? Bumped into him at the grocery store? Swiped right on Underworld Tinder?”
“I found him at a hotel club and he had me in his penthouse suite.” I leaned forward, lowering my voice so that it would not carry to the bedrooms.
Just then, there was a knock on the door. Julian had been informed I had returned. He definitely wanted the cameras and I knew it was time for me to act and sell him the story I had prepared. So, I told Jasmine to wait in the room and went out to meet him.
Things turned out well in the end. But not so great for Jasmine who was dragged away from the room by Julian, startling the other two girls in the process and forcing them awake from sleep, just because Julian believed I would take Jasmine with me to supposedly meet Dominic Ford tomorrow.
I was so exhausted. Sparrow that monster! He had actually made love to me the first time. I had enjoyed it so much, thinking the rumours about him must have been made up afterall. After my performance of kneeling and

crying, he had me suck his cock until he came. I thought that was it for the night.
