Two Can Play (Celeste and Dominic) novel Chapter 277

Chapter 277

But now Scarlett had come to ge seeking asylum from the man himself, and Bryan was no longer someone I could overlook. It was time to take my pound of flesh.”

Still, something irked me. Scarlett would not have come to me for help just like that. Not with her history, not with the research she was clearly capable of. She had to know the history between me, Bryan, and Dominic.

She pretended not to know the relationship between me and Dominic, but was that not precisely so I would think she did not know about my past with Bryan? She was more dangerous than she appeared. A hacker and a fighter, trained since childhood, and she had wrapped herself in the costume of a helpless whore.

Did she have another backer? Even though most of her story had checked out, there was always the possibility that someone had sent her to me. She could not harm me, no matter how hard she tried. But what about Dominic? What if he was the real target?

I shook my head and crushed the cigarette into the ashtray. I could not take chapces with Dominic’s life. Not ever.

I called him that night, and he answered on the second ring, his voice rough with sleep but instantly alert.

“Sparrow. What is it?”

“Sorry for calling so late, Boss. It is important.”

He listened quietly while I told him everything, the whole tangled story of Scarlett and Tasha and the Phantom Circle and Big Bryan. When I finished, there was a long silence on the line.

“Be careful,” he said finally.

I smiled into the dark. “Scarlett is not enough to make me worry about myself. I am more worried about you. You do not have bodyguards, do you?”

“I don’t need them.”

“You need them now. I am assigning you professionals, the best money can buy. And tell Celeste to keep her guards alert as well. We can’t take any chances.”

“And what about you?” he asked. “What is your plan to keep yourself safe?”

I let the smile widen. “I will keep my enemies closer.”
