Chapter 257
“You are special, Seraphine,” he said. “You are a delight.”
I managed a small smile.
“Congratulations,” he continued. “You aced your audition.”
I stared at him, the word catching me off guard. “Audition?”
He chuckled, waving a dismissive hand. “Sorry. My bad. I meant, you passed my test.”
I said nothing. I just watched him, waiting.
“We gave you a gift,” he said. “For a good performance. Check your phone.”
I quickly found my phone, and opened my banking app. My hands were shaking. Another ten billion dollars was sitting in my account, bringing the total to twenty billion in a single day.
Twenty billion. In a single day.
My phone suddenly began to ring, the screen lighting up with a contact name I did not want to see. Felix. I stared at the name for a moment, and then I ended the call and blocked his number without a second thought. I did not need him anymore. I did not need anyone. I had twenty billion dollars and two men who were clearly willing to give me more.
Emerson stepped closer, a sheaf of papers in his hand. “I have drawn up a contract. I want you to fill it with your own hands. The number of years you are willing to stay under my wing and do what you know how to do best.”
I took the contract from him, glanced at the standard legalese, and then looked up at him with a smile. All the pain I had endured was nothing compared to the rewards. Nothing. I would bear it a hundred times over if the price was right.
I thought about it. Calculated how much I could possibly make, how high I could climb, how much power I could accumulate. Five years. In five years, with men like this backing me, I could become one of the top billionaires in the city. I could surpass Dominic if I invested wisely. I could build an empire.
I wrote five years on the dotted line and signed my name with a flourish.
