“You are serious.”

He took a step toward me, his voice dropping to something barely above a whisper. “Why are you doing this? I lied. I manipulated someone you care about. I recorded her without her knowledge or consent. I am the villain in this story. Why would you help the villain?”
“Consider it payment,” I said, “for not giving Seraphine Pat’s video.”
He shook his head, his jaw tightening. “I cannot accept that. I cannot take payment for doing the right thing. I broke Pat’s trust. I am the one who needs to make amends, not you.”
“Fine. Consider it a loan. When you get your fortune back, you can pay me the full amount plus interest. And you will make things right with Pat so she can get the closure she deserves and move on with her life.”
He was quiet for a long moment, his eyes fixed on the ground, his breathing slow and measured. When he looked up, there was something new in his expression, something that looked almost like hope.
“Deal.”
“Good. Do not make me regret this.”
“You will not. I swear to you, you will not regret this.”
I pulled out my phone, dialed Dominic’s number, and pressed the phone to my ear, watching Kingsley watch me with an expression I could not read.
I pulled out my phone and called Dominic.
“Hey,” he answered, and I could hear the smile in his voice even through exhaustion. “Everything okay?”
“Everything’s fine. I need a favor, actually. I want to set up a meeting with Sparrow.”
“Sparrow? What for?”
“Nothing you need to worry about. You’re the one who told me what he’s capable of in the first place. I just need to make use of it now.”
“All right.” I heard him shift, papers rustling somewhere in the background. “Let me make a call. Give me a few minutes and I’ll send you the location. He’ll be expecting you.”
“Thank you.”
“I’m about to be discharged, so I’ll head home and we can talk properly when you’re done.” There was a pause. “Be careful, Celeste.”
“Always.”
I turned to Kingsley, who was watching me with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension.
“Who is Sparrow?”
“Someone who is going to help you get your life back.”
Twenty minutes later, I had an address, and I drove Kingsley. The bar was tucked away in a part of the city I had never visited, a narrow storefront with no sign and a door that looked like it had been kicked in more than once. I pulled up to the curb and killed the engine.
