CELESTE

My hand was on the car door handle, the cool metal pressing into my palin, when the thought hit me like a slap across the face. Dominic was in danger and here I was, about to drive away alone.

I turned around and ran back into the house, my heels slapping against the concrete, my breath coming in short sharp bursts. The sounds of moaning and flesh slapping against flesh were still drifting through the house as I made my way to the sex room, calling out for the bodyguards as loudly as I could manage.

“Come out, both of you! Right now! We need to leave!”

The bodyguards emerged from the room, their expressions shifting from professional composure to alett concern when they saw the look on my face. One of them was still holding his phone, the video still recording, and I pointed at it.

“Turn that off and keep the footage. We need to go. Dominic is in danger.”

“What kind of danger, ma’am?”

“I do not know exactly but he asked me for help. That is all I need to know. We have to get to his house right now.”

They did not ask any more questions. They moved past me, their footsteps heavy and urgent, and I followed them out of the house. There were four cars parked outside. The bodyguards got into one of them and I got into my own car, pressing the ignition, the engine roaring to life.

I drove like I had never driven before. The streets blurred past me, buildings and trees and traffic lights merging into a smear of color as I pushed the accelerator harder, weaving between cars, ignoring the honks and the angry gestures from other drivers. My heart was pounding so hard I could feel it in my throat, in my temples, in the tips of my fingers where they gripped the steering wheel. Dominic did not sound okay. For him to call me and say those words, for him to actually ask for help from me, meant his situation was far beyond anything I could imagine.

The drive took ten minutes that felt like ten hours. When I pulled up to Dominic’s house, my stomach dropped.
