Chapter 186
She looked at me as I approached, her eyes traveling over my face, my body, like she was assessing a piece of property she had just acquired.
“You are really efficient,” she said, her voice dripping with mock admiration. “You actually got the video? Hmm. And here I thought Pat was different. So cheap yet acting so righteous. In less than twenty-four hours, you were able to get her into your bed.”
I did not respond. I could not. My jaw was clenched so tightly that my teeth ached.
“I need to see the footage,” she said. “I want to know how good it is.”
I nodded. I attached the flash drive to my phone, my fingers numb and clumsy. I opened the video file, kept the brightness low, moved over some scenes and pressed play. The screen flickered to life. Pat’s face appeared. Her body. And then her moans filled the air between us, those soft, breathless sounds I had drawn from her with my mouth.
I stopped the video immediately.
Seraphine laughed, a low, delighted sound that made my skin crawl. “Why did you stop the video, Kingsley? Are you so shy? You must have done a very good job if she is moaning so passionately. Good. Let me have the flash drive.”
I pulled the flash drive out of my phone and held it out to her. She took it from my fingers, her nails brushing against my skin, and she lifted her hand to tap my cheek, patronizing and smug. “I am so impressed with you, Kingsley. You are a reliable man.
You will go places.”
She turned and began to walk away, her heels clicking against the asphalt, the flash drive clutched in her hand like a trophy.
And I watched her go.
But my mind was somewhere else. It was back in that hotel room. Back with Pat. Back to the moment she had told me, “I am willing.” Back to the blood on the sheets. Back to her kindness, her trust. She had given me something precious, and I had traded it to a woman who would use it to destroy her.
I could not do it.
