Chapter 156
I combed my hair, looked at my bare face in the mirror, and nodded at my reflection. “Not bad. I will not really have to spend so much time there anyway. will just go, say a few words, and leave. Knowing Domink, he will not have much to say back. And then I will be gone.”
I took a deep breath and sat down to wait until it was a few minutes to four, then I got dressed. I did not pick a dress that showed off my figure. I did not pick anything tight or sexy. picked something plain, a simple navy shift dress that covered everything, no cleavage, no curves on display. There was no need to look attractive for what I was about to do. It was better to look plain, forgettable, like a woman who was not trying to be seen.
I sent Pat a text saying I was leaving and gave her a heads up. She replied almost immediately: “There is no need to text me updates since you are coming back directly. I will just get the juice from your mouth when you return.”
I smiled despite myself, shaking my head at her choice of words, and put my phone in my purse.
I walked out of Helix into the late afternoon sun, the air warm and still, the parking lot quiet. I was walking toward my car, keys in hand, my mind already rehearsing the words I would say to Dominic, when I saw a familiar figure approaching from the far end of the lot. I stopped, squinting against the light, and when the figure got closer, my face broke into a genuine smile.
“Felix?” I called out, surprised and pleased. I had not seen my brother in a while. The last time we spoke was when he called to question me about visiting Seraphine at the hospital. I had been so angry that I blocked his number, but I had unblocked him eventually. He had not reached out since then. I had not even told him the address of Helix’s new location, and I had not done any full online marketing yet. How had he found me?”
But I was happy to see him. Felix was the only sibling I had in this world. He and my mother were the only blood relatives I held dear. I started walking toward him, my smile widening.
As he got closer, I realized something was wrong. His face was red, veins standing out on his forehead, his jaw clenched so tight I could see the muscles jumping beneath his skin. He was walking, fast, too fast, his strides eating up the distance between us with an aggressive purpose that made my instincts prick up.
I opened my mouth to speak, to ask him what was wrong, when he screamed at me.
