Chapter 178
SERAPHINE
The divorce certificate sat in my tap, the words blurring together as the tears I thought had exhausted kept coming, kept falling, kept staining the official document that declared my marriage null and void.
1 clutched my stomach because/there was a tightness there I could not explain, a physical ache that had nothing to do with hunger or injury and everything to do with the way my dreams had crumbled, the way my ambitions had shattered, the way the future I had painted in my mind had been ripped away before I could even blink.
Where did it all go wrong?
I sat there on the pavement outside the restaurant, my dress bunched around my thighs, my hair a mess, my face a streaky canvas of mascara and tears, and I asked myself that question until it stopped making sound and became just a feeling.
I had given up sleeping with other men. After Dominic revealed himself as chairman of Veil Holdings, I had looked at my reflection and decided I was done. I was going to be a good wife. I was going to earn the love and trust of the fnan who had given me everything.
But last night had been an exception, a necessary evil, a sacrifice made because my hands were tied and Dominic had been the one who pushed me into it. He had made himself unreachable, refused my calls, denied my existence to the press, closed every legitimate door I tried to open. He left me with no choice, no alternative, no door that did not require me to sell my body to open
And now he looked at me like I was the villain of this story.
