Chapter 17.2
I completely buried myself in work at the office. I went through reports, signed documents, had meetings with department heads. The hours slipped by the afternoon turning into evening, the sky outside my window shifting from blue to orange to
gray.
And then, just as I was about to pack up and head home, my phone buzzed.
A message from the man tailing Celeste.
I opened it. And my blood ran cold.
It was a picture. Celeste, getting into one of the most expensive cars I had ever seen.
The next picture showed a man opening the door for her. Tall. Broad shouldered. Dressed in a suit.
Dominic Ford.
The next picture showed them walking into a mansion together. Holding hands.
I stared at the images, my heart hammering against my ribs, my hands trembling with a rage so intense I thought I might black
out.
Without a second thought, I dashed out of the office and got into my car. I started the engine and tore out of the parking lot, my tires screeching against the asphalt.
As I drove, I recalled Seraphine saying she had not seen Dominic, that she had no idea where he was. I immediately called her.
She picked up on the second ring. Her voice sounded hoarse, like she had been crying.
“Hello?”
“I know where Dominic is,” I said. “I can take you there. I’m on my way to his location right now.”
There was a pause. “I’m not interested.”
“Really? Because I just got a picture of your husband holding hands with my wife as they walked into a mansion together.”
The silence that followed was deafening. When she spoke again, her voice was sharp, urgent.
“Where are you? I’m not in the right frame of mind to drive.”
“I’ll pick you up.”
Minutes later, I pulled up in front of her house. She was waiting by the gate, already dressed. She got into the car without a word. I didn’t spare her a glance. I just hit the accelerator and we were off.
Neither of us spoke. The silence in the car was thick enough to choke on. I could feel her presence beside me, could feel her anger and her hurt radiating off her in waves, but I didn’t have the energy or the inclination to acknowledge it.
All I could see were those pictures. Celeste. Dominic. Holding hands.
