James’s voice was cold, and the easy charm he usually carried had disappeared. There was open contempt in his expression as he stood firmly in front of Rose.
His gaze moved from Victoria to Alicia, then finally to Derick.
“Transfer the property?”
Victoria looked genuinely surprised.
Alicia blinked.
“You mean the estate is being transferred to Rose?”
Derick, however, didn’t look surprised at all.
In fact, he thought it made perfect sense.
The Taylor family had spent a fortune purchasing the property years ago, back when his father was still alive. They’d continued spending heavily on its upkeep ever since.
The main house had been designed specifically for Rose.
Although the Taylor family’s primary residence was in Washington, D.C., they occasionally came to New York. Yet whenever they did, everyone stayed in the guesthouses or smaller cottages scattered around the estate.
No one had ever lived in the main house.
The younger generation had always assumed it was being kept for the older members of the family.
The truth was that it had always belonged to Rose.
“Surprised?” James asked.
He looked at Victoria.
“Whatever Grandma decides is carried out immediately. The entire estate—the main house, the grounds, everything—is Rose’s.”
His voice hardened.
“And once it’s hers, why would you need to decide which flowers stay, which ones get removed, or where Rose is allowed to live?”
The meaning behind his words was obvious.
What right did you have?
Once the property was transferred to Rose, no one else had any say over it.
Victoria immediately shook her head.
“James, that’s not what happened. I didn’t know Grandma had decided to transfer the property to Rose.”
She sighed.
“I thought Rose was coming back to the family, so I was only trying to figure out how to make her feel comfortable here. I wasn’t trying to take control of anything.”
Alicia was still processing the news.
The Taylor family had always considered this estate extremely valuable.
It was in a prime location, and because of its size and history, it was practically impossible to put a price on it.
Everyone had assumed the property would eventually be divided among the family or assigned to one of the younger members.
No one had expected Grandma to give the entire thing to Rose.
Alicia quickly said, “The transfer is a good thing.”
She looked toward Rose.
“Dad and everyone else have always been worried about my allergies. That’s why they wanted the flowering trees removed.”
She smiled.
“But I can deal with it. If Rose likes the trees, that’s what matters.”
James’s expression didn’t soften.
“You don’t need to apologize for having allergies.”
Derick frowned.
He agreed that giving Rose the estate was perfectly reasonable.
What bothered him was James’s attitude toward Alicia.
His older son had walked in and immediately started attacking her.
“James.”
His warning was unmistakable.
Alicia quickly slipped her arm through Derick’s.
“Dad, don’t be upset.”
She gave him a reassuring smile.
“James is just protective. He’s worried about Rose. I understand.”
She glanced toward James.
“What’s important is that we’re all together now like a family.”
James stared at her.
“A family?”
His laugh was cold.
“Don’t dress it up like that. You two have each other.”
Victoria’s face tightened.
A flash of hurt crossed her eyes.
She opened her mouth, but no words came.
Derick’s expression darkened.
“James!”
But James didn’t back down.
Rose stood quietly nearby, watching the argument unfold.
For the first time, she was seeing the tension within the Taylor family up close.
And now that she knew the truth about her own past, everything felt different.
Her biological mother, Sophia, had died tragically.
Victoria, meanwhile, had remained at Derick’s side all these years, maintaining the appearance of a happy, perfect family.
Rose didn’t want to become part of this argument.
“I’ve been standing for a while.”
She turned toward James.
“I’d like to sit down.”
The hostility in James’s expression disappeared almost immediately.
He looked at her, concern replacing anger.
“Of course.”
He turned toward her.
“I’ll take you inside.”
Before leaving, he glanced back at the others.
Then he called to the gardeners.
“Put every tree back exactly where it was.”
The gardeners immediately stopped.
“Take care of everything properly. Nothing gets removed from this property again without Rose’s permission.”
He looked directly at Victoria and Alicia.
“If Alicia’s allergies are that serious, she can avoid this part of the property.”
His voice was merciless.
“But this is Rose’s home now. If living here is too difficult for you, then you should consider staying somewhere else.”
Alicia’s expression fell.
She clearly hadn’t expected James to go that far.
For a moment, hurt flashed through her eyes.
He was essentially telling her to leave.
Derick’s face darkened.
“My son is unbelievable.”
He knew James’s personality better than anyone.
Once he’d made up his mind, there was no changing it.
Stubborn didn’t begin to describe him.
James ignored his father’s reaction.
He gently took Rose by the arm and led her away.
Behind them, Victoria immediately touched Derick’s shoulder.
“It’s okay.”
She tried to comfort him.
