The kids woke up not long after.
Noise returned immediately.
“Marcus!” Eli ran in. “I dreamt I beat you again.”
Marcus stood.
“That won’t happen.”
Ava followed behind.
“That’s just a dream.”
“Not this one,” Eli said.
Marcus just shook his head slightly.
I watched them.
This strange… blending.
Not forced. Not rushed.
Just happening.
Slowly.
By evening, Marcus was at the door again.
Shoes on. Bag in hand.
No dragging it out.
“I’ll see you tomorrow,” he said.
“Definitely not tomorrow,” I replied. “I don’t need you in my house every day.”
He blinked once.
“Oh. I meant at work.”
