“Come in.”

Eli was the first to spot him.

He stood in the hallway, arms folded, eyes narrowed like a tiny inspector.

“You came back,” he said.

Marcus paitsed.

“Yes.”

Eli nodded once, like he just confirmed something in his head.

“Good.”

Ava appeared behind him, quieter. Watching.

She looked at Marcus from head to toe. Shoes. Hands. Face.

Then she stepped aside.

“You can come in,” she said.

I turned away quickly before they saw my smile.

The kitchen became… chaos.

Not bad chaos. Just… children involved chaos.

Marcus stood at the counter reading the pancake instructions like it was a contract.

Eli climbed onto a chair immediately.

“Can I pour?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because you will pour everything.”

Eli thought about it.

“…true.”

Ava stood beside Marcus, watching closely.

“You’re doing it wrong,” she said.

Marcus paused.

“Show me.”

She took the whisk from him.

“Like this.”

He copied her.
