It’s over!
Lydia POV
Silence.
It lasted four seconds.
I counted.
In those four seconds, his face changed exactly once.
Not shock.
Not joy.
Not even confusion.
Something colder.
Something harder.
Something that made my entire body go still.
When he finally spoke, his voice was dangerously calm.
“Excuse me?”
My throat tightened.
“I took two tests.”
His jaw flexed.
Then he gave one short laugh.
And it was one of the ugliest sounds I had ever heard.
“You cannot be serious.”
I stared at him.
“I am.”
His expression darkened.
“No.”
I blinked.
“No?”
“No,” he repeated, sharper now. “Absolutely not.”
My heart started pounding harder.
“Dave…”
He stepped away from the desk.
Not toward me.
Just enough to make the room feel smaller.

Bears stddenly I couldn’t quite believe we were having the same conversation.
AUX VOICE came out smaller than I wanted.
“I’m telling vou I’m pregnant ”
“And I’m telling you,” he said, cutting across me, “that women do not suddenly become careless by accident after one night.”
The words landed so hard I actually forgot to breathe.
For a second, I genuinely didn’t understand what he meant.
Then I did.
And my face went hot.
Then cold.
Then hot again.
My mouth parted.
“Wow.”
That was all I could get out.
Because wow.
He kept going.
Of course he did.
“Was this the plan?” he asked, voice clipped and brutal. “Get me into bed once and suddenly there’s a pregnancy?”
I looked at him like he had physically become someone else in front of me.
“Are you hearing yourself?”
“You tell me,” he snapped. “Because from where I’m standing, this looks very convenient.”
Convenient
I actually laughed
A hollow, broken sound that didn’t even feel like mine
“Convenient?” I repeated. “You think I wanted this?”
He said nothing
And somehow, that was worse.
Because he wasn’t calming down.

Ha wasn’t considering.
He was standing there looking at ine like I was some calculating little liar who had finally played her hand.
Tears burned behind my eyes immediately.
Humiliating.
But I refused to let them fall yet.
“You really think I would trap you?” I asked quietly.
His face didn’t soften.
Not even a little.
“I think women in situations like yours have done worse.” 2
There.
That sentence.
That exact sentence.
That was the one.
The one that would stay.
The one that would rot in my memory for years.
Women in situations like yours.
Not Lydia.
Not his wife.
Not even a person.
A category.
A girl with less power trying to hold onto a man with more.
My throat closed.
I looked at him for a long moment and realized, with horrible clarity, that there are some things people say to you that permanently rearrange how you see them.
This was one of them.
When I finally spoke, my voice was frighteningly calm.
“You are a very wicked bastard.”
Like I had walked into his study holding an accounting error.
And this time, I couldn’t stop it.
One tear slipped down before I could wipe it.
I hated that he saw it.
The sound cut through the room so sharply I flinched.
He glanced at the screen.
His jaw tightened.
Then he answered.
Of course he did.
Of course.
“Yeah,” he said into the phone, already half turned away from me.
ood there.
together with pure spite.
