Too Late To Love Me I Already Left With His Twins (Lydia and Dave) novel Chapter 265

Change

Ava and Eli POV

“Obviously.”

Ten minutes later, our nanny was preparing to leave.

She called Auntie Anna and explained that she needed to go home but Mom still wasn’t back. She asked whether Anna had been able to reach her.

We couldn’t hear everything Anna said, but we watched our nanny’s face change while she listened.

Then she nodded.

“Okay. I’ll bring them over.”

She hung up.

“Bring us where?” Eli asked.

“Auntie Anna’s house.”

I frowned.

“Why?”

“She said you two should come over.”

“But Mom didn’t tell us we’re having a sleepover.”

“I know.”

That made everything feel slightly strange.

Our nanny asked if we were hungry.

We both looked at each other.

“Hmm.”

“We’ll eat with Mom when she comes back,” Ava said.

Our nanny suggested oats and milk instead.

“Just something light.”

We agreed.

While she prepared it, I watched the clock.

Mom should have been home by now.

Eventually, the phone rang.

Our nanny answered.

It was Auntie Anna.

She listened, nodded and then turned toward us.

“Come on. Let’s get your things.”

We finished our oats, packed a few clothes and gathered our essentials.

Ava stopped me when I started putting more things into the bag.

“No need for all that.”

“Why?”

“We left some things at Auntie Anna’s the other day.

“True.”

“So just take two clothes.”

I shrugged.

“We’ll be back soon anyway.”

Neither of us knew how wrong that sentence was.

The drive to Auntie Anna’s didn’t take very long.

But when we arrived, something immediately felt wrong.

Auntie Anna wasn’t there.

That was suspicious.

Very suspicious.

We went upstairs anyway.

Her chef came to ask whether we wanted dinner or something light.

“No,” we both said.

He suggested a few things.

“Perhaps some mini croissants? Pain au chocolat? Fruit tartlets? Or maybe some cinnamon brioche?”

We stared at him.

“No, thank you.”

We were still a little full.

But I was starting to feel worried.

Something wasn’t making sense.

We went into the bedroom and sat on the bed.

“Why isn’t Mom calling?”

Ava looked at me.

“Even if she had an urgent meeting or something, she’d have called us, right?”

I nodded slowly.

“Don’t you think it’s all suspicious?”

“Mom isn’t this reckless.”

“Exactly.”

I looked around the room.

“What if she’s planning a surprise?”

Ava’s face brightened for half a second.

“Is there any special occasion coming up?”

I thought about it.

“No.”

Ava shook her head.

“Nothing for the next three months, I guess.”

“Exactlyyyy what I thought.

We laughed, but it didn’t last.

Before we knew it, we had fallen asleep.

When we woke the next morning, sunlight was creeping through the curtains.

Ava sat up first.

“I had a bad dream.”

“What happened?”

She looked at me seriously.

“Mom became an ugly–looking thing and left us because of that.”

I stared at her.

“Wow.”

She frowned.

“Are you sure it wasn’t your imagination?”

She nodded.

“I’m sure.

“Well, even if Mom became ugly, she’d definitely not leave us.”

Ava smiled slightly.

“True.”

She climbed off the bed.

“Let’s see if Auntie Anna is back.”

We went downstairs.

When we asked her where Mom was, she told us Mom was away for a business meeting.

But there was something about her eyes.

She wasn’t looking at us properly.

She kept looking away.

Ava noticed it too.

“She isn’t telling us the truth.”

“Maybe it’s one of Mom’s gimmicks.”

“Maybe.”

Eventually, Auntie Anna told us she was going upstairs.

“Get our mom right,” Eli called after her.

She paused.

“Yes.”

Then she disappeared.

We looked at each other.

“She knows something.”

“Definitely.”

We were still trying to figure out what when the sound of the front door opening reached us.

Then footsteps.

We pushed through the doorway.

“Dadddd!”

We both ran toward him.

For one second, he couldn’t move.

Then Eli collided with his waist, followed immediately by Ava.

He dropped down and pulled both of us into his arms.

“How do you know we’re here?” Eli demanded, wrapping his arms around him.

Dad squeezed him tighter.

“I have my ways.

“I missed you so badly.”
