Anna POV
My voice collapsed.
He pulled me into his chest.
I grabbed his shirt with both hands and sobbed.
“Poor Lydia.”
His arms tightened around me.
“I know.”
“I don’t know what to tell the kids.” My words came between uneven breaths. don’t know what I’m supposed to do. I don’t know what to say to them.”
“You don’t have to figure that out tonight.”
“She doesn’t deserve this.”
“I know.”
“She was just “I shook my head violently. “She was just talking to me yesterday. She was fine.”
Theo rubbed a slow hand over my back.
“I know.”
“What if she-”
“Don’t.”
I looked up at him.
His eyes were red.
“She hasn’t lost yet,” he said quietly. “Lydia is a fighter.”
I swallowed.
“You don’t know that.”
“I know her.”
He looked toward the emergency theatre.
“And I’m not ready to believe otherwise.”
We sat there.
Minutes turned into hours.
The hospital seemed to have its own strange rhythm. Nurses hurried past us. Trolleys squeaked over the tiled floor. Someone
cried quietly at the other end of the corridor. A monitor beeped somewhere behind a closed door.
I drank coffee because I didn’t know what else to do.
Theo didn’t drink anything.
He barely moved.

Every time the theatre doors opened, both of us looked up.
Every time a doctor walked past without stopping, my stomach dropped.
At some point, I stopped checking the time.
Then finally-
The doors opened.
I shot to my feet so quickly the chair scraped violently against the floor.
“Doctor!”
I rushed forward.
My foot caught against the edge of the chair.
I went down hard.
My palms hit the floor.
For a second, I just stayed there.
Theo reached for me.
“I’ve got you.”
“I don’t need-”
I pushed myself up before he could finish.
My knees were shaking.
I faced the older doctor walking toward us.
“What’s the result?”
He removed his surgical cap.
“Did she survive?”
My voice was barely recognizable.
The doctor looked at me carefully.
“The surgery was successful.”
I exhaled so hard my entire body sagged.
“Oh, thank God.”
“But-”
My relief stopped immediately.
“But what?”
He exchanged a brief glance with one of the younger doctors behind him.
“The operation addressed the injuries we could immediately treat. However, Ms Lydia sustained severe polytrauma.”
I stared at him.

“What does that mean?”
“She had significant internal bleeding, multiple blunt–force injuries to the chest and abdomen, and a severe traumatic brain injury.”
My fingers curled into my palms,
“She also required blood transfusions during surgery. We were able to control the major sources of bleeding, but her brain injury is our biggest concern right now.”
“Is she awake?”
“No.”
The word landed like a stone.
“She’s currently unconscious and on mechanical ventilation.”
“So she’ll wake up?”
The doctor hesitated.
“We cannot tell you that yet.”
My throat tightened.
“What do you mean?”
“With traumatic brain injuries this severe, the first twenty–four hours are extremely important. Brain swelling can worsen after the initial injury, even after surgery has been completed successfully.”
I felt dizzy.
“So the surgery didn’t fix her?”
“The surgery gave her a chance.”
I stared at him.
He continued gently.
“Right now, she’s critically ill. Her blood pressure, oxygen levels, neurological status and intracranial pressure will need to be monitored continuously. She’s being transferred to intensive care.”
“Can we see her?”
“Not yet.”
“Why?”
“She needs to be stabilized first. The ICU team needs to settle her.”
I swallowed painfully.
“So what do we do?”
“For tonight?”
He looked directly at me.
“You wait.”
I hated that answer.

But there was nothing I could do with it.
Rest.

I left the doctor’s office with my legs feeling strangely detached from my body.
A ventilator tube disappeared between her lips. IV lines ran from her arms. Monitors surrounded her bed, displaying numbers that meant nothing to me but somehow felt terrifying anyway.

“Please.”
My voice came out as a whisper.
Behind me, Theo stood several feet away.
Not once.
“I can’t.”
I looked at him.
Theo nodded slowly.
