Stammer

Anna POV

“Sorry… are you sure?”

The words barely came out.

I heard myself stammer.

Actually stammer.

I had never stammered in my entire existence. Not during arguments, not during presentations, not even when I was caught doing something I had absolutely no business doing.

But now my tongue wouldn’t cooperate.

“G–Greadow Hospital?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

I gripped the phone tighter.

“I’m so sorry, but… are you sure you have the right number?”

“Ma?”

“Bring them here. Now.”

“But Madam-”

“Please, just bring them.”

I closed my eyes.

For one terrible second, I couldn’t speak.

I couldn’t tell two children that their mother had been involved in an accident.

Not yet.

Not when I didn’t even know whether she was alive.

So I lied.

The kind of lie adults tell children when the truth is too cruel for their little hearts.

“No, sweetheart. Mommy just called me.”

“She did?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

I forced myself to breathe.

“She said there’s a work emergency.

Ava’s voice came closer.

“What kind of emergency?”

“A big one.”

“Is she coming home?”

“Not tonight.”

There was silence.

“She has to get on a plane,” I continued, keeping my voice steady. “She’s going to another country for work, so

I know.

I know, baby.”

His voice cracked.

I couldn’t think about that.

I couldn’t.
